An irresistible Roger Federer won his seventh Wimbledon title with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory over a valiant Andy Murray.
Murray was unable to hold back the tears after a fourth grand slam final defeat from as many attempts – three of them to Federer – and when addressing the crowd, he was unable to keep it together.
Despite making an ideal start by taking the opening set, Murray’s performance level dropped after Federer got back to one apiece against the run of play.
Federer started nervously in contrast to the controlled aggression of his opponent, who broke him in his first service game, before the Swiss broke back.
Play was suspended when rain began falling torrentially, as officials decided to close the roof with the forecast gloomy for the remainder of the day.The victory means Federer equals the all-time record for men’s singles titles at Wimbledon, held by William Renshaw and Pete Sampras. He will also equal Sampras’s record of 286 weeks at No1 when the rankings are updated on Monday.
