FISITA, the international network for automotive engineers, announced today the winners of its global competition for students and young engineers to design the future of vehicle braking systems.
· Young engineers from across the globe present their vision of future vehicle braking systems
· Finalists present their futuristic designs at EuroBrake – the world’s largest braking technology conference – to leading industry figures from Audi, Daimler, TMD and Alstrom
· The BLOODHOUND Project’s Tony Parraman delivers special keynote address
FISITA Aimed at helping launch the careers of tomorrow’s automotive engineers the ‘Daimler Student Innovation Competition’ inspired students from around the world to design a technical poster representing their vision of what brakes will look like in 2025.
Entries came from 16 countries, with 22 winners selected by leading experts from industry and academia. Winning concepts included electromagnetic brakes, brakes that ‘think for themselves’, and even gyroscopic wheels that use wind resistance to stop moving vehicles.
The winners were brought to FISITA‘s annual EuroBrake event to exhibit their designs and share their ideas with thought-leaders and braking specialists. The winners were given a unique opportunity to connect and network with high level industry executives, culminating in the competition Grand Final, presented by FISITA CEO Chris Mason.
FISITA CEO, Chris Mason said: “We are proud to provide a global platform for young engineering talent to showcase their work to some of the most influential industry leaders from the automotive sector. As an organisation we are always looking for new ways to uncover new automotive engineering talent, and the ‘Daimler Student Innovation Competition’ has proven to be a very successful way of doing this.”
Three overall winners were selected from the finalists:
Shino George, Politechnico di Torino (Italy) for the ‘Most Innovative Idea’
Arved Esser, Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany) for ‘Best Design’
Marek Gebauer, Technical University of Ostrava (Czech Republic)’ for ‘Best Presentation’
Top prize winner, Shino George, who designed a system that could end the problem of rollback on hills after releasing the parking brake, said: “EuroBrake was an amazing opportunity to meet some of the big names in the industry and to further understand the challenges they have faced and conquered. Discussing my concept with expert judges opened my eyes to what is possible – incredibly they even suggested that in the future my design could become a reality. My hope is to develop this concept into a fully working prototype.”
EuroBrake brings together engineers, manufacturers, academics and students every year and is acknowledged as the ‘must-attend’ event within the global braking technology community. This year was no different with big names from across the industry and beyond, including: Audi, Ford, Honda, Mercedes-Benz and BLOODHOUND.
BLOODHOUND Project’s Tony Parraman who was a guest speaker at the Grand Final, said: “I was impressed by the standard of entries that were entered and the breadth of ideas that were shared. It was fantastic to see this young talent being given the opportunity to share their thoughts on such a globally acclaimed stage in the FISITA EuroBrake Conference. I hope to see more great initiatives like this in the future.”
