Ballesteros, 54, a five-times major winner, had been recuperating at his home in northern Spain after four operations on the tumour and a course of chemotherapy. Ballesteros had fought a long battle after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008 and passed away at 0110 BST (0210 Central European Time) on Saturday morning due to respiratory failure, his family said. Severiano Ballesteros was born on 9 April 1957 in Pedreña (Cantabria), a small village on the southern shore of the Bay of Santander in the north of Spain.

The courage and determination he had shown for 30 years on the golf course helped him in his greatest challenge. In 2009,Seve Ballesteros set up the Seve Ballesteros Foundation in partnership with Cancer Research UK to raise money for brain cancer research. His aim was to make a real difference in the fight against brain cancer.
