London is home to the flavours and aromas of the world. Italian cuisine also thrives here alongside that of other countries with their own equally interesting gastronomic traditions. It therefore seemed appropriate for us to celebrate our milestone with an analysis of the five major cuisines of the world.

Following opening remarks we are delighted to welcome Diplomatic Representatives from the five countries who will set the stage:

Antonio Caprarica, well known Italian author, formerly RAI-TV Correspondent from Middle East, Moscow, London, Paris , who after three years in Rome as Director and Editor-in-Chief of RadioUno and Giornali Radio RAI has been recently reappointed as Director and Senior Correspondent of RAI’s UK Bureau, will lead the panel and the Q&A session with the audience.

The seminar will be given in both English and Italian with simultaneous translation.

After a short Drinks Reception, international soloist, Cristiana Pegoraro, will entertain us with a special piano recitalfeaturing works by Mozart, Beethoven, Lecuona and two of her own compositions.

Biographical Notes on Cristiana Pegoraro

Cristiana Pegoraro graduated from the Conservatory of Terni and continued her studies with Jörg Demus in Vienna, Hans Leygraf at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. She subsequently perfected her art with Nina Svetlanova at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.

Cristiana has performed consistently since childhood as a soloist and with orchestras for some of the most important organisations and concert halls in Europe, the US, South America, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. Her tours in the Gulf Countries made her the first Italian female pianist to perform classical concerts in Bahrain, Yemen and Oman. In 2005, she played for the President of Italy, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations and the Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg.

In 2008, she was the only European representative at the Spring Festival at the United Nations in New York, and performed in the hall of the General Assembly. That same year, she debuted at the Musikverein in Vienna and at the 16th edition of Umbria Jazz with two sold out concerts. 2009 and 2010 to date have been equally prolific. Currently, she is performing all 32 Sonatas for piano by Ludwig van Beethoven in Italy, Germany and Austria.

Her vast discography numbers 22 CDs and includes three albums with her original compositions (“A Musical Journey”, “Ithaka”, and “La mia Umbria”), numerous recordings of classical composers, new interpretations of Astor Piazzolla’s tangos, which she arranged for solo piano, and performances of pieces by Cuban composer, Ernesto Lecuona.

About the Accademia

The Accademia Italiana della Cucina, or, as we are known in the UK, the Italian Academy of Cuisine, was founded in Milan, Italy, in 1953, and has over 7000 members in 272 “Delegations” throughout Italy and in more than 40 countries worldwide. The Accademia seeks to safeguard and ensure a greater awareness of the traditions of authentic Italian cuisine and improve current standards throughout Italy and the rest of the world.

The Accademia lends its support to initiatives which, through the study of the history of Italian food and its development over the centuries, contribute to a greater appreciation of Italian food worldwide as an expression of Italy’s customs, civilisation, culture and science. For its work, the Accademia was designated a Cultural Institution by the Italian Government.

The London Delegation, set up in 1985, is one of the largest and most active foreign Delegations and has gone from strength to strength over the years. As part of an on-going programme of supporting local restaurateurs in London in their efforts to provide the best Italian food possible, the Accademia has recently produced a second edition of its “Guidebook to Italian Restaurants in London” which will be launched at the Seminar.

Accademia Apulia UK is proud to present, Genius Loci, the international Photographic Award

aimed at promoting up and coming photographers of all nationalities based in Italy.

The award aims to foster cultural exchange between the two countries through the Arts.

A distinguished jury of their peers will select the photographers who best interpret and explore

the concept of local identity within a multicultural context.

The works of the finalists will be shown in a group exhibition in London at The Royal

Horseguards, 1 Whitehall Place SW1, when the winner will be announced.

The work of each applicant should address the following:

The spirit of place and cultural diversity

Each candidate will need to submit a photographic essay consisting of three digital

images in colour that explore the concept of Genius Loci.

Images may be digitally enhanced for colour/contrast/brightness, but not manipulated.

The works submitted must be unpublished.

Each candidate will retain the copyright to their own work; however, each applicant

grants Accademia Apulia UK a worldwide license to feature any or all of the submitted

images in any of their publications, their website and/or in any promotional material.

V. The timeline of the competition is as follows:

10/01/2011 The names of the three finalists will be announced on the Accademia website.

11/02/2011 Official opening of the exhibition & announcement of the winner.

VI. Terms and conditions: how to apply.

Each candidate will need to submit:

1. Application form (attached below)

2. Artist’s Statement (200 words max)

3. Curriculum Vitae (2 pages max)

4. Three digital images in colour

Each photo must be saved in .jpg format at 72 dpi and to be no larger than 800KB, labeled with

the candidate’s name and its corresponding number of photo, for example:

The three photos will need to be compressed in .zip format and saved in a folder with the

photographer’s name, for example:

The finalists will be asked to provide high-resolution images of the works submitted: 300DPI at

a minimum recommended size of 3000×2000 pixels. Accademia Apulia UK will print the

selected works on A1, A2, A3 float frames.

The winner will need to supply original material if required.

The organisers cannot be held responsible for emails that do not arrive. This is due to email

security settings or restrictions placed by their Internet service providers.

Participation in the competition presupposes the full knowledge and acceptance of these rules.

Events may occur that render the competition itself or the awarding of the Award impossible

due to reasons beyond the control of Accademia Apulia UK; the organisers may at their

absolute discretion amend or vary the Terms & Conditions of Accademia Apulia Art Award and

the candidates agree that no liability shall attach to the organisers as a result thereof.

Accademia Apulia UK

Launched in April 2008, Accademia Apulia UK (the Latin name of Puglia), a non-profit

organisation based in London, intends to promote a cultural and professional dialogue

between the UK and Italy. The organisation comprises of established professionals, from

all walks of life (Antonio Carluccio, Johnny Shand kidd, Simonetta Agnello Hornby and

Karen Essex are only some of the organisation’s key members) that provide a strong

network of support to aspiring young professionals. The Accademia seeks to nurture

individual development as well as providing a professional blueprint, all of which can

be accessed via the association’s website. Every year the Accademia aims to organise

workshops, exhibitions, films and theatrical events, which offer youngsters the opportunity

to network with experts in their field.

“The organisation’s value and commitment are reflected in a yearly art Award that

encourages and celebrates the talent of up and coming artists. This year the Award will

consist in a Photographic Prize, Genius Loci: the spirit of place and cultural diversity,

open to photographers of all nationalities based in Italy and the United Kingdom. The prize

aims to foster stronger cultural links between the two countries through the Arts,” stated

Nancy Dell’Olio, Patroness of Accademia Apulia.

Te Jury, comprising of established photographers, art critics and journalists, will identify

3 finalists that best interpret idea of the Genius Loci. The award ceremony is planned for

Friday, 11 February 2011 at the Royal Horseguards, 1 Whitehall Place, London SW1, in

the presence of the Jury, the Committee of Accademia Apulia and Nancy Dell’Olio. The

winner will be awarded a cheque for £ 1,000.00

of members, each coming from a diversity of professional, cultural, ethnic and national

backgrounds. This eclecticism ensures that the organisation is a vibrant and exciting

Breakthrough in Climate Change talks at UN Aviation Body

At the end of difficult negotiations during the 37th session of the Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the 190 contracting states of the International Aviation Body were able to strike the first global governmental deal to commit the aviation sector to reduce greenhouse emissions from international aviation from 2020. Europe played an instrumental role in securing this agreement and has taken the lead by including aviation in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), which will start in 2012. European Commission Vice-President Siim Kallas, responsible for Transport and EU Commissioner Connie Hedegaard responsible for Climate Action, welcomed the breakthrough, which came after almost a decade of deadlock at ICAO on how to address emissions from international aviation. They underlined that aviation is the first sector to commit itself to such emissions reductions and that the agreement will cover over 90% of worldwide air traffic.

EU Vice President Siim Kallas, Responsible for Transport said: This deal is very significant because at a global level, governments and the aviation industry, have for the first time agreed to cap greenhouse emissions from 2020. It is the first time any transport sector has been able to reach this kind of global deal. This is a real breakthrough. There is a lot more work to be done, but this is a deal which is very good news for the aviation sector, good news for the environment and good for a more sustainable future.”

EU Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard said “ICAO has taken a step in the right direction. The Resolution adopted expressly recognises that aircraft emissions must be stabilised and that also big developing countries have a role to play in this regard. The goal is not as ambitious as Europe thinks it should be, but at the same time ICAO has recognised that some States may take more ambitious actions prior to 2020. Critically, the deal is a good basis for proceeding swiftly with the inclusion of aviation in the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme from 2012 as foreseen by the EU legislation in force.”

The agreement at ICAO is composed of a number of important elements, which form part of a comprehensive package:

Global Goal: ICAO has agreed on a global medium-term collective goal of capping emissions from international aviation as of 2020, whilst recognising that States or regions such as the EU can act sooner and be more ambitious. In addition, aviation should become more fuel efficient at a rate of 2 % per year.

Action Plans: States will notify to ICAO the different measures that they are taking to meet the agreed goal by submitting Action Plans. States with less that 1 % of international aviation activities are not expected to submit plans unless they choose to do so voluntarily.

Market-based measures: ICAO recognises the important role of market-based measures, such as emissions trading, and has agreed to a range of guiding principles to be applied by States designing and implementing them. The EU ETS is consistent with all 15 of these principles. Crucially, ICAO has refrained from language which would make the application of the EU’s ETS to their airlines dependent on the mutual agreement of other States. It was this requirement that led to a stalemate at the last ICAO Assembly in 2007. This time, the EU agreed to engage constructively in dialogue with third countries during the implementation of its ETS, notably regarding how to deal with emissions from incoming flights from third countries.

Exemptions for small emitters: A crucial element in this package is the recognition that small emitters, in particular air carriers of countries falling below a threshold of 1.0% share of air traffic, may be exempt from the commitments to submit action plans towards achieving the global medium-term goal and from the application of market-based measures.

Financial assistance: The agreement also includes provisions on technical and financial assistance for developing countries’ actions to mitigate the climate change impacts of aviation.

Background: Aviation and climate change: towards a global approach to a global problem

Emissions from international aviation currently account for about 2% to 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, but as aviation is expected to grow significantly in the coming decades, this figure is forecast to rise. Efforts to fight climate change should therefore also address emissions from aviation and measures should be taken to make aviation more sustainable.

This is why the EU has taken a comprehensive approach to reducing the impact of aviation on the environment. It is going forward with a mix of different measures, including research and development for new greener technologies, such as cleaner aircraft engines and fuels, more efficient air traffic management systems and flight procedures, and extending the existing EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) to include emissions from air carriers as of 2012.

Addressing the climate change impacts of international aviation has proved to be a major challenge at ICAO. The EU has been pressing ICAO to take leadership in this area by demonstrating that it can agree on ambitious goals. The EU has also made it clear during the negotiations that any future global framework should not hamper the efforts of States or regions like the EU who are going ahead with their own measures.
