“Can the Mafia kills us too?” – L'ItaloEuropeo

For the first time in UK a famous Italian movie about the Mafia. We met the director, Pierfrancesco Diliberto and we talked with him about the Mafia.

“Can the Mafia kills us too?” “Don’t worry! It’s winter now the Mafia kills only in summer.” This is one of the movie’s topic sentences, and it characterizes the film.
The movie has been shown for the first time in Uk on 24th of July, in Italian language with English subtitles in the Cinema Riverside Studios in London with the presence of the movie’s director. The projection was organized by Italian Cinema London with the collaboration of Italian Institute of Culture in London, with the aim to talk about Italian Mafia.

Mafia kills only in the summer is 2013 Italian comedy drama film, directed by Pierfrancesco Diliberto, known on television like Pif. In the Italian movie cast you can see a formidable Pif that plays the role of Arturo, the main character, Cristiana Capotondi, who plays the role of Flora, Claudio Gioè and Ninni Buschetta.

In a Forrest Gump-style this movie tells the story of Arturo, a guy born in Palermo during 1990s. The first part of the film is seen through the eyes of the main character who is still a child and the innocence of Arturo is a metaphor of the ignorant population of Palermo. The people ignore the existence of Mafia and when someone is killed by Mafia’s person (Mafioso) the population just accuse the victim to having dirty hands.

When Arturo hears and sees the prime minister Andreotti, so he will become a legend for the child. When the child ask to his father if the Mafia kills, the father answers “Don’t worry the Mafia kills only in the summer”. With the massacre season in 1990s, finished with the death of Borsellino and Falcone, Arturo realizes that the Mafia kills and not just in the summer.

In the Riverside Studios location we met the director, Pierfrancesco Diliberto, and we asked him: this movie shows the Mafia through the eyes of a child, but how did you see Mafia when you were a child.

“When I was a child, the Mafia, described by the parents, wasn’t a problem for me. The Mafia didn’t concern us and it wasn’t dangerous. If you don’t disturb the Mafia, the Mafia doesn’t bother you. This people used to said. But today it’s not in this way, it’s different. “

how do you see the Mafia today?
“Now the Sicily Mafia has decided to disappear, it’s weaker than ‘Ndrangheta because the antimafia mentality is more developed in Sicily and with this film I wanted to talk about the Mafia before and after of 1990s.”

How do you explain the Mafia phenomenon to the Londiners?
“When the Mafiosi from Sicily escape from bench they go to London, because in Uk does not exist the crime of Mafia criminal conspiracy. So it’s absurd that a person of Mafia who escapes and get Berlin or Uk can’t be arrested.” Mafia kills only in summer director concluded telling that the European Union cannot remain indifferent and it have to allow the arrest of Mafia’s people also abroad.
