Ludovico Einaudi played his unreleased “Elegy for The Arctic”

WORLD – On the eve of the most important OSPAR meeting (The Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic), Ludovico Einaudi, the Italian musician and composer famous worldwide, played his unreleased “Elegy for The Arctic” off the Wahlenbergbreen glacier, on the Svalbard Islands (Norway) to raise awareness and let his voice be heard in defense of the Arctic.

(codice da incorporare) He reached the glacier by travelling on the Greenpeace boat “Arctic Sunrise” to join the 8 millions of people who signed a petition to ask the international community to subscribe an agreement, aimed at the protection of the Arctic from climate changes and exploitation.

The decision that could drastically change the Artic’s fate is to be taken one of these days: the idea is that of establishing a 226,000 square kilometer protected area in the Arctic Ocean, which is currently the least protected worldwide. This area would be as big as the United Kingdom.

This project is fully supported by the panel of scientists at the OSPAR, who stressed the immense ecological value of this region and the huge thawing it is facing due to the climate change.

On the other hand, the governments of Denmark, Norway and Iceland are standing in the way of the approval process and are putting the approval itself in danger.

The video of Einaudi playing his unreleased song in the middle of the Arctic Ocean is now going viral on social networks and it is bringing up, once again, the tremendous issue not only the Arctic, but the whole world, has to face: climate change.

Hoping that his help in this campaign will bring more awareness about this problem, we can also give our contribution to this cause by signing this petition:

MEMBERS OF LONDON’S ITALIAN COMMUNITY SUPPORT PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS CEREMONY

 Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby

A high-profile Italian-born British-based TV broadcast journalist and two Italian sponsors played important roles at this year’s Sandford St Martin Awards at Lambeth Palace. The event celebrated excellence in religious, ethical and spiritual broadcasting and featured some of the most popular programmes in the UK today.

Al Jazeera English newsreader Barbara Serra, who was born in Milan, was the chair of this year’s TV judges at the special ceremony on June 8 th which was attended by many programme-makers and VIP guests (please see full list of winners below). “The judges had to choose from a very varied shortlist, which included documentaries, historical reconstructions and even a full feature film,” said Serra.

“Due to current international events it was perhaps no surprise that many entries focused on one religion in particular – Islam”.

During the Awards Ceremony, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, gave the keynote address and called on the BBC to treat religion “with the same seriousness as other genres like sport, politics, economics or drama.” Two Italian sponsors donated some of the wine for the event.

Orlando Terror Attack: Leading UK/US Counter-Terrorism Think Tank warned of US being prime IS target LONDON

 – 12th June 2016 A leading UK-US Think Tank focusing on counter terrorism and radicalisation warned in a report last year that the US remained a prime target for IS Having warned the US Homeland Counter Terrorism and Intelligence Sub Committee about the scale of the threat in 2014, The Henry Jackson Society subsequently produced a report ‘We Will Conquer Your Rome: A study of Islamic State terror plots in the West’ which showed that the US was the most frequently targeted country in the West, despite attacks in Europe having come to fruition, in contrast to the US.

The report showed that the US is the most frequently targeted country, and had suffered 12 plots between July 2014 and August 2015, over double the next two nearest targets: Australia and France. There were an equal number of schemes faced in the US as in Europe as a whole, however the former had previously witnessed no fatalities.

The report is available at: http://henryjacksonsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/ISIS-brochure-Web.pdf

The shootings in the gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida represents the deadliest mass shooting in recent US history and the largest terror attack on American soil since 9/11 While details are as yet unconfirmed it would appear the shooter was an IS sympathiser.

The group has claimed responsibility and have called him an IS ‘fighter’ Today’s tragedy demonstrates the scale of the threat from Radical Islam and underscores the need for urgent action both domestically against radicalisation and internationally against the source of this terror to cure both the demand and supply sides for this menace.

Associate Director Douglas Murray has called the targeting of a Gay nightclub was ‘predictable’ and underscores the spread of homophobic hate preaching from radical Muslim preachers.

NO MAN IS AN ISLAND Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams

London – NO MAN IS AN ISLAND Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams gave the keynote address on Saturday at The London Encounter, an annual cultural festival with profound Catholic roots. His address was entitled ‘No Man Is an Island’, which was chosen as the theme for this year’s London Encounter, expressing the idea that being connected with others is at the heart of what it means to be human.

[in photo Dr Rowan Williams with London Encounter organiser Richard Solomon]

Reflecting on the eponymous poem by John Donne, Dr Williams said, “Abstract equality isn’t enough; human equality and human dignity lie in the sense of being there for the well-being of another”.

Illuminating this theme through literature including works by Edith Stein and Dostoevsky, he explained that this concept of responsibility for the other is “the price we pay for the exhilarating sense in which life is about sharing, and to which communion is fundamental”.

Exhibitions at The London Encounter considered topics ranging from the paths to unity illustrated by the biblical story of the family of Jacob; the writings of the twentieth-century Dutch diarist Etty Hillesum; and a reflection on the Greek, Roman and Christian origins which developed into the social and cultural construct of Europe.

In the afternoon a panel of speakers including Lord Glasman and Mario Mauro, the former Vice-President of the European Parliament, discussed the fundamental questions facing Europe.

An evening musical event showcased music as the expression of our relationship with and need for the ‘other’, featuring live performances of music by César Franck and Astor Piazzolla.

patriciaThe new ensemble Tango Quintet led by the musician and composer Romano Viazzani made its debut with selections from Piazzolla’s Serie del Ángel.

The London Encounter was inspired by the Rimini Meeting, the world’s largest annual cultural festival. In addition to the exhibitions, presentations and events, the day highlights humanity’s “desire to collaborate with and participate in the reality before us”. Trooping the Colour and more in London

Here we are! This is the weekend of the official celebrations in full regalia. On 21 st April, Her Majesty the Queen has reached the eminent milestone of 90 years, but as a well- established tradition, official military celebrations come on the second Saturday of June to profit of a maybe more temperate weather. Trooping the Colour has quite ancient origins during the enlightened years of ‘700. The name Colours refers to the British Army regimental flags: they display the uniform colours worn by the soldiers of different units.

The colours were indeed essential because they provide a rallying point on the battlefield: during conflicts it could be easy for troops to become disoriented and separated from their unit; the colours acted as an immediate recall, a simple but ingenious ruse that well solved the problem of lack of modern technologies.

Trooping because young officers marched in between the ranks of troops formed up in lines, with the flags flaunting high so to be easily recognizable. The Guards are among the oldest regiments of the British Army, and have always done their job as personal bodyguards of The Sovereign, since monarchy restoration after the 1660 civil war.

It is likely that the ceremony was performed first during the reign of King Charles II. However, towards the middle of the ‘700 it was decided that the parade would be used to celebrate the birthday of the Sovereign and became an annual event when George III became king in 1760. Once again Trooping the Colours is an opportunity to pay tribute to 90 years of Elizabeth II.

Trooping the Colour on Horse Guards ParadeThe ceremony will start roughly around 10am on House Guards Parade. Just some numbers: there will be about 1,400 officers and soldiers, 200 horses, more than 400 musicians, at least 113 word of command given by the Officer in charge of the parade. The ceremony starts from Buckingham Palace, along The Mall and to House Guards Parade, Whitehall and back again. Her Majesty the Queen will inspect her troops and greet her subjects along with the other members of the Royal family.

At 1pm, The Royal Air Force will fly over the skies to end the spectacular event. The parade will be broadcast live on the BBC. Make sure to arrive quite earlier so not to miss the show and stand on The Mall or on the edge of St. James’s Park overlooking House Guards Parade.

From the rigour and formality of Trooping straight right to another event decidedly less formal to be held this Saturday. A mass of naked cyclists will cross the city for the World Naked Bike Ride, a celebration of the power and individuality of the human body. There will be will be six start locations: West Norwood, Clapham Junction, Tower Hill, Kings Cross, Regents Park and Hyde Park. For more details, please visit www.worldnakedbikeride.org/uk/ site.

Alitalia launches Casa Alitalia: the first two new flagship lounges at Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa airports

Italian hospitality and live cooking in the setting of a private Italian home

Casa Alitalia flagship lounges open at Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa. New passenger experience embodying a concept of Italian hospitality will be available, including signature moments like an exclusive live cooking service. The opening ceremonies took place in Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa airports in the presence of Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, the Chairman of Alitalia, and Cramer Ball, the Italian Airline’s CEO.

With Casa Alitalia we will showcase Italian excellence and style in an elegant yet relaxed setting, where a warm welcome with attention to details will make our guests from all over the world feel as they were in a typical Italian home,” said the CEO Cramer Ball. The opening of these new lounges is a further step in the re-launch plan of our ground and in-flight services. We aim to become the best airline in Europe, and to achieve this we must ensure excellent service for our passengers before, during and after their flights.

Casa Alitalia is the next level of celebrating traditional Italian feeling and hospitality. The new concept was conceived and created by Alitalia staff and transformed into reality by the internationally famed Italian architect Marco Piva, whose major projects include the Bulgari Window Concept Design, the Feng Tai Financial Center in Beijing, Rome’s Domus Aventino and Milan’s Gallia hotels and the Port of Dubai.

Casa Alitalia has been designed to be more like an Italian home than a public space, and the interiors – the reception hall, relaxation and conversation areas, cooking and dining areas – have been designed to be as similar as possible to those of a beautiful Italian house. The experience begins at the entrance door of the lounge, inspired by the main door of an Italian palazzo, which separates the chaotic environment of the airport from the comfortable, elegant, homely atmosphere of Casa Alitalia.

The catering service at Casa Alitalia reflects Italian culinary excellence and includes a live cooking area where, twice a day, a chef prepares a selection of pasta dishes and pizzas in front of the guests. Even vegetarian and gluten-free choices are available to travellers. In addition, there is a buffet and bar area where guests can try a selection of Italian wines or enjoy a typical aperitivo prepared by a professional bartender. Casa Italia’s services also include VIP rooms and rooms for private meetings, a library, a prayer area, bathrooms with showers and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Casa Alitalia is not just a place to relax while waiting for a flight, but a showcase for the unique values of Italian excellence, thanks to partnerships with leading Italian brands, such as Poltrona Frau, for the furnishings and chairs; Cantine Ferrari, Alitalia’s official sparkling wine supplier; Lavazza, which has created exclusive coffee blends for the Italian airline; and Terme di Sirmione, whose wellness products are available for guests. The materials used in the lounges – from the marble to the lighting and the backdrops – embody Italian culture, territory and daily way of life.

Casa Alitalia at Rome Fiumicino is located on the site of the previous “Giotto” lounge, in boarding area G of the airport – dedicated to long and medium-haul extra-Schengen flights – and covers an area of about 800 square metres, with over 115 seats for guests.

At Milan Malpensa airport, Casa Alitalia has a new location in the Satellite Nord boarding area, and covers about 500 square metres, providing over 90 seats. Guests of Casa Alitalia at Malpensa will also be able to board the aircraft directly from the lounge by means of a dedicated air jetty.

In line with the Alitalia lounge refurbishment plan started in October 2015, renovation and improvement work has already been completed at the airports of Venice, Catania, Milan Linate and at the former “Dolce Vita” lounge in Terminal 1 of Rome Fiumicino airport. Refurbishment of the lounge at Naples Capodichino airport, of the Young Lounge at Rome Fiumicino for unaccompanied minors, and New York’s JFK lounge are all close to completion. The Italian company also plans to open two new lounges at Rome Fiumicino: one in “Molo B” in September 2016 and the other in the new “Molo F” in early 2017.

Free access to Casa Alitalia and other lounges of the Company is reserved exclusively for Alitalia’s Freccia Alata Plus and Freccia Alata, and SkyTeam Elite Plus members, holders of long-haul and medium-haul Alitalia Business Class tickets and holders of Alitalia American Express Platinum cards flying with Alitalia. Passengers can also enjoy the services of Alitalia lounges by purchasing a single admission ticket for €30 on the web, through the Customer Center, in travel agencies or at airport ticket offices.
