The Minister of Justice Orlando and the President of ANAC Cantone took Anti-Corruption Summit press conference at the Italian Embassy.

London –  More than 40 countries attended, together with numerous International Organisations. The British Prime Minister David Cameron praised the Italian anti-corruption legislation.

The Anti-Corruption Summit was organised by the British Government at Lancaster House in order to promote the fight against corruption at the international level, pursuing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the G20’s UK strategy on the issue.

Italy actively participated to the meeting thanks to its consistent engagement towards anticorruption that has resulted in many positive and effective legislative interventions as witnessed by the positive UN reports on the Italian initiatives. 

The Minister and the ANAC President Raffaele Cantone illustrated the Italian strengths in dealing with anti-corruption, such as national programmes for the prevention of corrupting practices and the creation of the new Authority, the development of a shared culture of legality, the promotion of transparency rules for Administrations and companies, and the new criminal law sanctioning corruption.

At the end of the second session concerning “Tackling Corruption”, British Prime Minister David Cameron indicated Italy as a model for its anti-corruption legislation, specifically as far as the confiscation and management of goods involved in corrupting conducts.

On the margins of the event, the President of the National Anti-Corruption Authority and the Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Angel Gurria co-signed a bilateral collaboration agreement.

Eitan Pitigliani: from Like a Butterfly, starring the legend Ed Asner, to his upcoming film about the story of a young dancer

Nick is a young actor who’s desperately looking for success; to obtain it he progressively builds up a wall around himself to separate and protect him from the world. One day Nick accidentally meets an old Hollywood star thanks to whom he understands that that world lives inside him and that, first and foremost, it is fundamental to look inside yourself: only by being aware of your past can you pave the way for the future.

Like a Butterfly is a short and intense film (27 minutes long) directed and produced by Eitan Pitigliani (winner of the Golden Spike Award) Falcon Productions and Enrico Mastracchi Manes in collaboration with Rai Cinema.

The Movie features an amazing cast: the American Legend Ed Asner, winner of 5 Golden Globes and 7 Emmy Awards, plays the role of an old Hollywood star whose career is on its last legs and Will Rothhaar plays the young Nick, the main character, Cindy Pickett, Rita Raider, Brad Greenquist and Micheal G. London. The film features the Music of Paolo Vivaldi and the Cinematography of Daniel Katz.

The Director is now working on new projects as “Out of Control” – the story of a young dancer – that he will film during the summer, and another feature film about soccer.

 Where did the idea of “Like a Butterfly” come from? What message were you trying to get across to the audience?

Well, this is a tough one. Actually in my research I always try to stick to what I believe is the reason why I became a director, which is the need to capture the essence of life ­ and of what life could be ­ and then put it on screen, through a special medium: the film. What is great about films is that you make them together with other people, in my case with wonderful and special individuals that helped me take the idea I first had to the final stage. The story of the film came from a series of personal experiences that I have had over time, that I then jotted down in words together with the screenwriter Alessandro Regaldo. There were so many things that inspired me while I was writing the story.

Then, thanks to the wonderful people that worked on it and supported me in this endeavor, I was able to finally get it off the ground. I am so happy of the way the film turned out, especially because of the message that I wanted to convey to the audience, which is that even in the darkest and most difficult moment of your life you can find a way to look inside your soul and ‘create value’. This subject means a lot to me, since I see that young people today have an extremely hard time finding themselves ­ and believe me, I am aware of a lot of people who are simply OUT OF CONTROL – by the way this is the title of my next project, that I will film this summer, about the story of a young dancer who is completely lost. Many of them don’t know who they are, nor what they want to be, and just follow the role models that today’s society and media promote.

This way in most of the cases they live a virtual life that keeps them from discovering who they really are. But one day, when they finally wake up and realize it….Well, that’s really tough! And that is why I believe that only someone who has been around the block and has a special wisdom can really help them find their way in life. This is what Ed Asner represents in the film and I am so happy of what Ed said a few days ago after watching it for the first time. He was so thrilled that he decided to record a special message, in which he spoke very highly about the picture and expressed special thanks to Rai Cinema for its support. He also had wonderful and unexpected words about me that made me feel so flattered and at the same tremendously honored to receive such praise. It was a life changing moment for me. And it made me realize that, exactly as it is in the film, there is always hope for the youngsters today to meet amazingly inspiring people, like Ed, who have accomplished so much in their life and therefore can save them from getting lost.

 What was it like working with the star Ed Asner, with Will Rothhaar and all the other Actors?

Why did you chose these particular actors? When I first started picturing the story in my mind, I had a couple of inspirations, than thanks to Enrico Mastracchi Manes (the person that made this film become a reality), Daniela Zanchini, Martin Guigui and Dahlia Waingort (the executive producers), I had the chance to meet Mr Asner and surprisingly get to know that he was interested in the idea of the movie.

I then worked on the adaption of the script and sent it to him. One day I got a call and to my biggest surprise I found out that his was a YES. He was willing to star in the film, and I was ecstatic about it. I have to say that from that moment on it all became a dream.

Ed had confidence in me and it was such a pleasure to have a legend like him take my directions with such ease and trust. Then, of course, hearing Ed’s profound and grandfatherly voice giving life to the words from the script that me and Alessandro wrote was for me simply jaw­dropping. Regarding the young protagonist Will Rothhaar… it was really hard to find an actor that could be such a perfect complement to Ed, and when I did, thanks to Brad Greenquist, the magic of the film started. Will is such a talented actor, a star, and working with him was wonderful. Then I had the cherry on the cake, Cindy Pickett, a stunning actress that I fell in love with right away, who represented perfectly the original idea I had for the female character ­ the amazing Wendy – that, in a way, is the one that drives the story. But to know what I am talking about, you gotta watch the film.

Was there a particular event or time that you recognized that filmmaking was not just a passion, but that it would be your life and your living?

And why did you decide to focus on Short Films? I always liked movies, since I was a little kid. And over the years I realized that all I wanted was to be a director. I think it was when I was around 13 or 14, but it must have been in my mind from the moment I was born, I guess.

It is not easy to understand who you are, what is your place in the world and what is the message that you want to get across. I directed the first short film ‘only’ when I was 19 though, and then I went to study abroad, in London and New York. I feel like, besides being born in Rome, which I love so much, I kind of have two different souls: one lies in Los Angeles, the other is in London. Regarding what you asked about the decision to focus on Short Films, actually it is not really a choice. Even if I do love short films, in my opinion they are a natural and necessary stepping stone to a full length feature, that for a variety of (right) reasons must be done only when you are 100% aware of yourself, your style of directing and what you want to tell the audience. Only then you can think of shooting a feature film and hopefully making a living as a director.

 You are now working on your first Feature film. What led you to make the great leap?

Yes, I am actually working on two projects right now, and it is all thanks to my team and my wonderful manager Cinzia De Curtis, a unique person that believed in me right from the beginning and that is always on my side. The first project is the story of a young dancer, a feature film of which I will make the short version this summer. It’ s actually just around the corner and I am so excited at the sole idea, since it’s a very touching story that means a lot to me.

The second is a feature film about soccer, taken from my personal point of view, which is a spiritual story, essentially a drama but with a hint of comedy in it. Both films deal with problems that the young people of today have to face in everyday life, especially in the modern society that demands a lot from them and doesn’t give much back. I’m so excited to make these two movies, starting with the short this summer. It’s going to be amazing.

 What makes a film great for you? Are there certain qualities that make a film better for you?

In my opinion a film is a collaborative process that becomes great only when all the people involved in the making are allowed to express themselves at best. They are all essential in order to make a film that will resonate and touch people’s heartstrings. First of all, the actors. Having the right protagonists for your film is just a blessing and when you find them, you already have half of the film in front of your eyes.

I have to say that I have always been very fortunate to have superb actors like Andrés Gil – the protagonist of my previous short film, You will find me ­ and now Ed Asner, Will Rothhaar, Cindy Pickett, Brad Greenquist, Rita Raider and Michael London. Besides them, the first thing I concentrate on is the music, because it sets the mood of the film. It is very important to have a great composer that you trust and that trusts you.

I am, once again, really fortunate because I have found a soulmate in Paolo Vivaldi, one of the best Italian film composers, that was just nominated at the David Di Donatello this year. Paolo is a terrific artist who always captures my vision ­ which is not always an easy task. He is able to read my mind instantly, and then the music that he makes… it’s pure magic. The other essential component for me is the cinematography, and in the last project I had the pleasure to work with Daniel Katz, a brilliant director of photography thanks to whom the film looks just great. He did such a fantastic job. However there are too many people and souls involved in the making of a film that it is just impossible to think of it as one­person job.

It is more about team work and this is the beauty and the strength of being a director: having all these wonderful people and professionals that give their heart and soul to the story you wrote, or perhaps just envisaged, that then, thanks to the magic of the collaborative process, can finally become a real film. The movie will be broadcast on RaiCinemaChannel from May 26th and had been showcased at the 21st edition of the Palm Beach International Film Festival. It will also be at the Ferrara International Film Festival in June, as the only English film in competition; quite an achievement leading to more upcoming festivals.

Is Germany’s slowing economy affecting Italy?

 

No country’s economy is truly independent. International factors are always at play, and trade ensures that states are often reliant on one another. This is particularly true for members of the Eurozone. With one currency uniting most member states, and the European Central Bank, Europe’s economies work as parts of a whole. If one part is sick, then so is every other part. Which is why an economic slowdown in Germany can hurt Italy – badly.

Germany has the biggest economy in Europe and accounts for the creation of a large proportion of European wealth. Germany has long been dragging the Eurozone ahead, even as the Italian, Spanish and Greek economies have struggled.

Without Germany’s help, the Eurozone would probably not have survived its recent debt crisis. And when European consumers are out of pocket, German shoppers fill the void.

A German economic meltdown could be disastrous for the rest of Europe. It would pull many other economies down with it.

Unfortunately, 2016 has not been a strong year for the leading economy.

Germany’s economic slowdown

Germany’s economic woes are closely linked to China’s slowdown. Germany relies on trade of important goods and technology. Machinery, cars, and high-tech energy equipment have been bringing in billions, filling the needs of emerging countries.

But the emerging markets have struggled lately. Middle Eastern countries usually kept afloat by oil money are no longer riding the waves. Russia, facing Western sanctions, is unable to buy expensive equipment.

Germany’s industrial production at the start of the year was at 0%, with customer confidence plummeting. France, one of Germany’s closest trading partners, is struggling economically. The German economy is being weighed down from all sides.

Italy’s debt crisis

Italy has still been unable to rebound from the sovereign debt crisis. This is in large part due to challenging economic conditions and a lack of fiscal stimulus measures, but there are also signs that aspects of the debt crisis remain intact, including nonperforming loans and high unemployment.

Stimulus from the European Central Bank increased optimism, but failed to have the impact hoped for. It is a particularly vulnerable time for Italy’s economy. Headline consumer inflation is currently printing at -0.30%, with falling prices a strong indication of weak demand. Unemployment is at 11.5%, which detracts heavily from GDP growth, as well as consumption.

 

The German effect

In this context, Germany’s economic slowdown is particularly harmful for Italy. The vulnerable Italian economy is relying on its usual helping hand to pull it forward until it can get back on its own feet. But Germany needs its own help.

Germany’s troubles have a chain reaction. The rest of the Eurozone panics in response with consumer confidence plummeting, leading to more problems for Germany. Already struggling economies confront further unfulfilled expectations, creating a heavier burden for Germany to carry.

It remains to be seen how Germany will recover from this slowdown. Italy’s economy will have to carry itself in the meantime, a feat that will not be straightforward.

Sadiq Khan wins

He will be the first muslim Mayor of a western capital «I want to thank every single Londoner for making the impossible possible» – said Sadiq Khan in his victory speech last night. «I’m so proud that Londoners have today chosen hope over fear and unity over division». Khan, 45, raised in Tooting and son of a Pakistani bus driver, defeated the Eton boy Zac Goldsmith catching 53% of the preferences against a 47% of the Conservative Party’s candidate.

For sure Goldsmith’s campaign was not one of the best conceived. Racist and islamophobic – according to the Labour Party, that got London but was resoundingly defeated in Scotland and Wales.

The new London Mayor has huge challenges ahead and it won’t be easy to fulfil all the electoral pledges. Sadiq said he will be «a Mayor for all Londoners», but a real test to his ability will be set only by his concrete actions in the years to come.

He said he would freeze TFL fares for four years (after all, he is «the bus driver’s son who’ll make commuting more affordable»). He said he would start a plan to solve «the Tory housing crisis» – huge problem in London, affecting the vast majority of the population. He said he would stand up for London’s NHS – while there are some suspects of Conservatives will to privatise most of it. As far as we can see, equality is at the core of his political vision and his mission will be to tackle the growing inequalities rooting all across the british capital.

But that’s not all. Sadiq also said he would be «the british muslim who’ll take on extremisms» – as security was definitely one of the thorniest issue after the Paris and Brussels attacks. And business: London is one the most important financial hubs in the world – probably the most important with New York. Sadiq said that London will keep on being the most business-friendly city in the world.

Let’s see if he will manage to honour his plan: a busy agenda is to come and new unpredictable challenges are likely to knock at Sadiq’s door – as London is a city on the move, a fast-changing, growing metropolis.

Someone transformed Obama’s slogan «Yes, we can» in «Yes, we Khan». And Hope is also a buzzword spreading all across the media after his victory. Because who would have bet that a Pakistani bus driver’s son would have beat the handsome guy – son of a millionaire – from Richmond? Not many. But this is just London, after all. This is really a London story. And this is History, too.

Interview with Sadiq Khan Labour candidate for mayor

London – ( Just 1 days to go until the Mayor election) After Zac Goldsmith Conservative candidate for London’s Mayor  we ask some question to Sadiq Khan Labour candidate for mayor. 

Born in London politician and lawyer who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tooting since 2005 general election. 

What are the principle points of your election campaign? London is at a crossroads. We have to decide what kind of city we want to be. One where ordinary Londoners are able to live, work and send their children to school. Or one where only the rich can prosper and communities are divided by race or religion. I believe I am the right person to bring people together, to unite communities and help keep London an open and tolerant place to live. I want to protect what makes our city great and I will do this if elected Mayor. London gave me countless opportunities to fulfil my potential and build a better future for my family. I had a good state school education and a place at university, leading to a job which enabled me and my wife to buy our first home. I want all Londoners to have the same opportunities I had. I will be a Mayor for all Londoners.

London is saturated with people in search of employment, how does one provide jobs for everyone? How do you increase the number of jobs? In which sectors?

To give Londoners the jobs they need, we must ensure they have the right skills for the jobs of the future. I will create ‘Skills for Londoners’ – a new skills partnership that brings together the Mayor, businesses and employers to give London’s businesses access to the skilled workforce they need to grow. They will provide careers advice in schools and set up a tech talent pipeline to help young people, particularly girls, get jobs in London’s burgeoning tech sector. To increase the number of jobs on offer we also must support industry, amending legislation where possible to remove barriers that limit employment opportunities. This means supporting small businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs to help them grow in order to generate jobs and wealth. It also means protecting and promoting London’s world class art, culture and creative institutions. The thousands of jobs they create are currently at risk due to increasing costs which are forcing these institutions out of the city. I will also, and perhaps most crucially in the short term, campaign wholeheartedly to help ensure we stay within the EU. This will defend our competitiveness as a city and the jobs our membership of the world’s largest market supports.

London’s public transport is expensive. How could it become possible to reduce the cost?

After the cost of housing, transport fares are one of the biggest costs that many households face. They have risen sharply in recent years, with bus fares shooting up by over 50 per cent under the current Mayor. It can be a major barrier to opportunity and social mobility. We need a fares structure that is fairer and more affordable, and offers good value for money, while providing the revenue that TfL needs. As Mayor I’ll stand up for Londoners and freeze all TfL fares for four years meaning you won’t pay a penny more in 2020 than you do now. I will also introduce ‘The Hopper’, a new bus ticket so Londoners can change buses as many times as they need within one hour but only pay a single fare. This will be paid for by making TfL more efficient and exploring new revenue-raising opportunities.

Many young people are working on start up projects. What advice do you give these people?

My advice to those working on start-up projects, naturally, would be to vote for me as Mayor. I love the vibrant and dynamic start-up scene in London. With small businesses covering everything from fin-tech to food, they demonstrate the fantastic pool of talent we have in our city. I will be London’s most pro-business Mayor and this includes prioritising the support of start-ups I will use the powers of the Mayor to ensure London has the new industrial work-space crucial to those wanting to set up their own creative and tech businesses.

I will protect incubator and start-up space from redevelopment and even explore how we might factor live-work units into the affordable housing mix. I will use planning powers to ensure a commitment to investing in broadband infrastructure which is so crucial to the development of any small business, not just those in the tech industry. Start-ups will also be represented on my Business Advisory Board, a collection of business people and entrepreneurs who will advise me and help shape ongoing business policies.

Another important aspect is public health. How do you think the NHS can be improved?

I am passionate about the NHS and owe a lot to it. Like many people I am alarmed that the Tories have allowed it to drift into crisis. Since NHS London was abolished by the Tories, London is without the citywide strategic leadership on health it desperately needs. Waiting lists are longer, it is harder to see your GP and waiting times in A&E and for ambulances are increasing. London needs a Mayor who will stick up for the NHS, defending it from further Tory cuts and attacks, and provides real leadership and support. I am determined to be that Mayor. I will campaign for extra powers to coordinate health services across the city to provide proper strategic planning. This will promote borough innovation and help to shift the focus from reactive care to prevention and early intervention which would be a great improvement to the functioning oF London’s NHS. I will also work with the NHS and London Ambulance Service to help staff retention and recruitment, standing up for those who work in our health service. I will also do what is within my power to move towards parity of esteem between physical and mental health.

To reduce pollution and London’s traffic what do you plan if you were to be elected?

I know first-hand what the impacts of London’s filthy air can be, having developed adult onset asthma. I want to be the greenest Mayor London has ever had and have solid plans for a clean energy revolution which will reduce pollution and traffic. I will expand the Ultra-Low Emission Zone, introduce more environmentally friendly buses, and plant trees focused around schools. I will also establish ‘Energy for Londoners’ – a not-for-profit clean and green energy company that will lead on promoting low-carbon technologies and community energy generation across the city. Greening energy supply and achieving energy efficiency are crucial to meeting London’s ambition of reducing carbon emissions, generating our own power and regaining our position as a global leader on environmental issues. As a former Transport Minister in Government, I know that the growing congestion on London’s roads is a nightmare for all Londoners. I will help motorists across the capital by prioritising new river crossings in the East of the city, reducing the number of large lorries on London’s roads at busy times and keeping the congestion charge at its current level. My transport price freeze will also encourage people to use public transport rather than their own vehicles.

A huge problem in London is the cost of rent, how would you lower these housing prices?

What are your thoughts on the situation? Under the Tories, London’s housing crisis has gone from bad to worse. It now affects all Londoners, regardless of age or income. Londoners are spending more and more of their wages on rent and yet every year thousands of Londoners are forced out of our city, because they can’t afford to put a roof over their heads. I will be a champion for the two million Londoners currently living in rented accommodation and tackle the rising costs of renting head on. I will set up a new team of housing experts in City Hall called ‘Homes for Londoners’. They will introduce a London Living Rent, a below-market rent that will be offered in new build properties which will be a third of average renters’ income. This will make it easier for people renting privately in London to save up for their first deposit to buy a home. I will fight for the Mayor and London councils to have a greater say in strengthening renters’ rights over tenancy lengths, rent rises. I will also set up a London-wide not for-profit lettings agency for good landlords, building on the work that councils have started, and ending rip-off fees for renters. In the long run, the best way of addressing the rising cost of renting is to build more homes that Londoners can actually afford to buy. I will make this a priority and will build new homes on land owned by the Mayor, including TFL land.

What would be the first thing you would do should you be elected as mayor?

The first test of London Mayor is to keep Londoners safe. This requires tackling extremism and radicalisation head on whilst protecting police numbers and budgets. Zac Goldsmith would fail the vital first test as Mayor in less then two months as he is willing to put Londoners’ security at risk by campaigning to leave the EU. As Mayor, I will campaign for Britain to remain in the EU as it is vital for London’s jobs, growth, prosperity and crucially, our security. Leaving the EU would be catastrophic for London. European Union citizens in London won’t get a vote in the referendum, but they can still have their say by backing a Mayoral candidate who will campaign for Britain to remain in Europe on Thursday. “I don’t make promises I cannot keep”, that’s what Zac Goldsmith said 5 days before the election. The Conservative candidate for Mayor of London is putting the needs of Londoners first. He respects and wants to protect diversity in London promoting social cohesion, “ I think the diversity is what makes London the best city in the World,” he’s pioneering a campaign to restore the environment through the expansion and protection of green spaces, and he will fight against the housing crisis. With London’s Mayoral elections coming up , on April 30

London is saturated with people, and there’s a real problem finding a job, how do you increase the number of jobs?

I have to make the point that he jobs story in London is broadly a good one.We have more business today than we’ve ever had. Since Boris was first elected, eight years ago, since then we have more than a 1⁄4 of a million new businesses that did not exist back then. Everyone of them is creating jobs and opportunities, so that is a good story. My job, if I am elected, is to make London an even more business friendly environment. Politician don’t create jobs, they create an environment in which jobs can then be created. And I’ll do that by solving housing crisis, by building a vastly increasing number of homes being built, I’ll do that by grown the transport that underpins our economy, and I’ll do it by investing in creating a super vast broadband infrastructure network for London. We are, despite all the great things that had happened in London, we are very far down in the list of European cities in terms of broadband, we are 26 out of 33 and that is not acceptable for a city as important as London. So that is a big priority for me, and that matters for small businesses, that matters for everyone. My job is to also work with the government to ensure that we have a tax regime that is pro business but also that London gets the best possible deals. But that needs a man who can talk to government, and my opponent will not talk to government, and that matters for London, we depend almost completely on central government, for our powers and for our founding. ….You asked me a big question, sorry, I had to give you a big answer.

 The transport in London is very expensive. Can you find a resolution? Where do you think you can find money to solve the problem?

The problem is that London transport system is under huge pressure. There are humans travelling every day in conditions that would be illegal for farm animals. So we need to grow the network, we need to upgrade the network, and by the way it’s not just about keeping London moving, it’s also about keeping London growing. My priority has to be protecting the transport project, not making rush promises about fares, my opponent has made promises about fares, but they will cost 1.9 billion pounds. If you take 1.9 billion pounds out of the transport infrastructure that is an absolute disaster for London. Every single business organisation, big and small, every single transport expert says that you cannot take 1.9 billion pounds out of the budget of that reckon on transport infrastructure. Five days before the election, I’d love to make big promises on fares but that will be a totally dishonest thing to do.

zacI know well your opinion regarding pollution, for example Monsanto. Do you think it can be possible to find a resolution regarding the pollution in London?

I think London can and, if I am elected, will be the greenest and cleanest city in the world. We have all the tools, we need to do that. We have all the tools, we need to tackle air quality. We can clean up our buses, our cabs, our minicabs, our cars, our credit green card club for London. 10 thousand people every year die early because of air pollution. It is about promoting cycling, about walking, about protecting green spaces. There’s an enormous amount we can do. It is also about school. In my area I had a campaign to get outdoor learning in every school, to encourage to procure the best possible food for the kids, and it costs less: we got 30 primary schools that used to serve the normal junk to their kids and now sell the very best quality. And it costs less because more people are buying the food, the uptake in school has grown up. I am excited about the prospect of what can happen in London to make it greater.

Mr Goldsmith has shown is pride for living in a tolerant, diverse open­minded city where different races, classes and creeds can have civilise debate about issues. He highlight the need of a party that can represent people as they are: “if you want people to trust the police, the police needs to look like the people they are serving.”

TIM PEAKE TO START THE 2016 VIRGIN MONEY LONDON MARATHON

British ESA astronaut and digital marathon runner Tim Peake will be the official race starter of the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 24 April. Peake, who’s currently orbiting the Earth on board the International Space Station (ISS), has recorded a good luck message to start the race which will be relayed via giant screens to runners gathered at the event’s Blue, Red and Green Start Lines.

The message finishes with a 10-second countdown to 10:00 when 40 elite men and more than 37,000 mass race runners will set off on their 26.2-mile journey from Shooters Hill in south east London to Westminster.

Earlier, Sylvia Disley, widow of the event’s co-founder John Disley CBE and a 1952 Olympic relay medallist, will provide the more down-to-Earth send-off for the IPC Athletics Marathon World Cup wheelchair and ambulant races, and for the elite women. Peake, who’s part of a European Space Agency programme, will then embark on his own marathon mission when he straps himself onto the ISS treadmill to run the first ever Digital Virgin Money London Marathon in space.

Peake completed the 1999 London Marathon at ground level in 3:18:50, but this year is aiming to become the first man to run a marathon in space. He will start at 10:00 on 24 April, just like his fellow runners on Earth. He will follow a virtual ‘mixed reality’ video of the London Marathon course alongside avatars of other digital runners around the world who have also downloaded the London Marathon course in the RunSocial app.

Peake is aiming to cross the virtual Finish Line after 4:00 to 4:30 hours of running, just as thousands of club runners and charity fund-raisers make their own way towards The Mall in the heart of central London. Among the talented athletes who will be racing to the real Finish from Blackheath this year are the current London Marathon elite race champions, Eliud Kipchoge and Tigist Tufa, men’s world record holder Dennis Kimetto and London course record holder Wilson Kipsang, the men’s and women’s world champions, Ghirmay Ghebreslassie and Mare

 

Dibaba, and the second fastest woman ever over the course, Mary Keitany. There will also be more than 70 para-athletes competing in the third IPC Athletics Marathon World Cup, including the reigning wheelchair world champions, Joshua George and Tatyana McFadden, and Britain’s own six-times Paralympic champion, David Weir, who is going for a record seventh London Marathon victory.

The elites will be followed by thousands of club athletes, fun runners, charity fundraisers, celebrities, politicians and fancy dress costume wearers, including Peake’s colleagues and fellow-Space Agency personnel, Dr Jonathan Scott from ESA and Libby Jackson from the UK Space Agency, who are running in replica space suits.

Goodbye Dolce Vita, a series of events which involve cinema, literature and art

The Italian Cultural Institute presents Goodbye Dolce Vita, a series of events which involve cinema, literature and art, running from the 19th to 23rd April 2016. The aim of the project is to show the generational changes on the Italian cultural scene: Does it still make sense to talk about “Italian Style”? What’s the relationship between Italian culture and its legacy?

As outside of Italy still prevails an idea of the country linked to old cultural categories (from Neorealism to the Decadentism of Visconti and Fellini), Goodbye Dolce Vita comes from the idea to go beyond, showing a slow but continuing change in the codes of Italian culture. Developed in London, a place always open to new ideas and other influences, the project aims to tell about a new Italy, a country more responsive to the realities of our time and yet aware of the past.

What’s the connection between the new Italian documentaries, prize-winners at international festivals, and the golden years of Cinecittà? How do the visual arts relate to the avant-gardes and the design tradition? Is there exist a contemporary literature that may achieve success outside the national borders as it’s happening with Elena Ferrante right now?

Goodbye Dolce Vita, curated by Stefano Cipolla and Dario Pappalardo, will involve film directors Pietro Marcello and Roberto Minervini; artists Manuele Cerutti and Emiliano Ponzi; writers Claudia Durastanti, Giorgio Falco and Cristiano de Majo. 

Tuesday 19
– 7.00pm, ICI, screening of The Passage by Roberto Minervini, followed by Q&A with the director.

Wednesday 20
– 12.00pm, ICI, press conference with the ICI Director Marco Delogu and the curators Stefano Cipolla and Dario Pappalardo.

Thursday 21
– 12.30pm, lunch and talk with Claudia Durastanti;
– 6.30pm, talk with Cristiano de Majo, Claudia Durastanti and Giorgio Falco;
– 8.00pm, opening of the exhibitions by Manuele Cerutti and Emiliano Ponzi (special thanks to ARTUNER).

Friday 22
– 12.30pm, lunch and talk with Cristiano de Majo;
– 5.30pm, reading group with Giorgio Falco;
– 7.00pm, screening of The Mouth of the Wolf (La bocca del lupo) by Pietro Marcello, followed by Q&A with the director and the film editor Sara Fgaier.

Saturday 23
– 12.30pm, lunch and talk with Giorgio Falco.
