OCEAN CAY, MSC Cruises’ Caribbean island

Ocean Cay is a private paradise in the heart of the Bahamas. This pearl of the Atlantic Ocean owned by MSC was obtained from a former industrial site and, after being completely restored, has become a real dream destination.

Not only tourist offer characterize this tropical paradise.  MSC Cruises has in fact, in line with its sustainable philosophy, developed a project to create a positive and long-term impact  on the environment and on the Bahamas community, using materials and local suppliers and hiring local staff.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve was a unique project that required three years of work to reclaim and transform the island, making it today possible to offer the best possible experience to cruise passengers.

During the reclamation process 7,500 tons of metal waste were removed and a team of expert and marine biologists carefully removed individual colonies of hard coral from the debris at sea, transferring them to more suitable and uncontaminated seabed.

An innovative naturalistic program involved the island, having taken actions to promote an environment with high biodiversity and sustainable impact, and having planted more than 75,000 plants and shrubs throughout the island. is to offer its customers a complete tourist offer in full contact with nature.

Once arrived on this exclusive paradise on earth, guests can admire breathtaking views, infinite blue shades of the sea, white beaches and unspoiled nature.

Also available to guests is a planning of exceptional activities: from snorkeling to the vision of great timeless classic movies on maxi screens under the starry Caribbean sky, from paddle boarding or kayaking in the crystal clear sea to naturalistic excursions. Those who want can also enjoy a magnificent spa treatment or relax in a private cabana on the beach.

The island has seven white sand beaches for a total of two kilometers; each with its own particular characteristics will allow guests to try all the experiences of seaside tourism. Around the island there are 64 square miles of protected waters along which a coral nursery is being created.

The iconic 30-meter lighthouse host a bar and a terrace, and among the dining options there are the Sneakers Food Court, a rich buffet restaurant with international dishes, or the Ice Cream Parlor, a few steps from the beach.

BIC: “Brexit and the Law: What may come next?”

At the Palace of Westminster In Committee Room 10 on 12th February 2020 the British Italian Conservative have organised an event aimed to try to put some lights in to what can happen with the future legislations between EU and UK.

The conference was chaired by Maurizio Bragagni and Simon Blagden (BIC Chairman and Deputy Chairman respectively) at the kind invitation of Alberto Costa MP (BIC Honorary President), he proposed the Amendment to the Brexit Deal that leaded to his forced resignation from a Government position, the amendment however was later positively voted by the government. Alberto said: “the rights of EU citizens and UK citizens will be guaranteed perpetually underpinned by international law, my job will be to monitor the technicalities of how the Government will set those guaranties in laws”

The special guest was Simon Davis, President of the Law Society England and Wales, who talked about how the profession was organising to cope with the aftermath of Brexit and what it might mean for the legal profession mentioning that “What’s happens next depends on a great extent on you and those like you outside this room, for you I mean Politicians Lawyers Business Representatives and Activists”.

Followed by Maria Memoli, Law Society Council Member, ” “This is a very tense time for the citizen, businesses and member states and is worried about the divergence of views between UK and EU. Time is short. The transition finishes at the end of the year. In large parts of the economy, people rely on advice and support of solicitors”.

She was followed by Alessandro Belluzzo, President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce, who talked about the impact of Brexit and the hope that future negotiations would allow more rather than less opportunities for UK industries for trade, and then Gerardo Aprovitolo, a partner in the London law firm of ADL Solicitors, who talked about the problems facing European SMEs post-Brexit, the various free trade models that had been proposed, and how he hoped negotiations might be concluded in the best possible way to allow companies based either in the UK or Europe to continue to trade with its partners after Brexit. He was followed by Angela McFarlane, Market Development Director and Chair of Brexit Task Force, IQVIA, who gave a very interesting talk about how the UK leads the world in clinical trials and the importance of this industry, how the European Medicines Agency had been removed from the UK to the Netherlands over Brexit (and the problems that had ensued), and how the industry in the UK might remain able to continue to provide services (which mainly relied on free flow of data) within the EU. Sara Alessandrini, a criminal defence solicitor and partner at O’Keeffe Solicitors, then talked about how changes to do with the European Arrest Warrant had already occurred, and the challenges that lay ahead to continue to provide security with cross-border co-operation on law enforcement. The last speaker, Professor Mark Watson-Gandy, a Barrister at Three Stone Chambers, talked about insolvency laws and how these might change and evolve outside the EU. There was then a short question and answer section, followed by closing remarks by Maurizio Bragagni. Many speakers commented on the particular needs for continuation of trade in services with the EU, noting that most public interest seemed to be in trade in goods, which have much less influence on our balance of trade with the EU, and the hope that the British Government would recognise how important the service sector was to the UK economy.

Ideated and organised by Christian Vinante Giovannini, Gerardo Aprovitolo, Maria Memoli and Eleonara Gorla the event was extremely well-attended, with over one hundred guests, with a very relaxed atmosphere despite the high calibre of both speakers and invitees.

Discovering Eton College

London, Maria Vittoria Bognetti

Eton College was born in 1440 from by King Henry VI who desired to found an institution that would shape and educate the next british ruling class in the English Language, aiming at creating a natural ‘bridge’ between high school and university education level. It started as a charity school which provided free education for seventy poor boys in Windsor, Berkshire, who then continued their scholastic career in the exclusive 70 colleges between Oxford and Cambridge, leading universities in the world.

For the first time, Eton College opened his doors to an Italian production team, London One Radio, allowing us to perceive the unicity and the peculiarities of this institution in its whole beauty. Dr. Marco Liviero has been the voice who guided such tour in the numerous rooms of the college, by providing insights on what distinguishes them from other boarding schools. He explains that Eton College was love at first sight: he visited the school during an academic trip, and already passionate about the British culture, theatre and Shakespeare, he pictured himself in this institution. A dream that came reality as, for the past 19 years, he has been the Professor of English Literature at Eton College.

Eton is not like any other boarding schools, students are developed in toto. As Dr. Marco Liviero explains, “Excelling in school is not enough. Being passionate is an essential quality, and what is mot important is to be willing to invest effort and time in these”. The academic part is indeed just a small component of the education that student receive from Eton: they develop their passions, initiative spirit, and sense of responsibility through the many extracurricular activities from sport, to music and theatre.

The Farrer theatre, the creative heart of Eton College, is one of the most magical places in the boarding school. And the very essence of theatre allows Eton students to grow as human beings, touching the many spheres of an inclusive development: it allows to “understand who you are and who you can become”, key elements in the receipt to disclose the full potential of each student. It is not surprise that many brilliant actors passed from here, from Hugh Laurie, the Dr. House protagonist, to Eddie Radmayne, who recently won the oscar for his interpretation of Stephen Hawking in the Theory of Everything.

Eton’s traditions have been lasting for more than six centuries, and it is the combination of such solid and extraordinary background, academic excellence and a constant innovation that allows this school to be the most prestigious boarding school in the United Kingdom, if not the world.

“The school master’s skill is understanding the different talents of each pupils”, a quote by Quasiliano, found in a fresco in the Head Master Chamber, the office of the Head Master in XIII century, well embraces and expresses the spirit of this brilliant institution.

People in London urged to download app to improve dementia diagnosis

People in London are being urged to help improve the speed and accuracy of dementia diagnosis… by playing a smartphone game.

Alzheimer’s Society, the UK’s leading dementia charity, is calling on people to download and use GameChanger – a new brain games app – for just five minutes a day over one month.

Researchers say data recorded on the app will enable them to understand more about how people usually perform – which will later help them to identify the warning signs of Alzheimer’s.

There are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, 72,000 of them live in London. The national figure  is set to exceed one million by 2021.

Someone in the UK develops dementia every three minutes, but a third of cases are undiagnosed.

It is hoped GameChanger will lead to better understanding of the condition which, in turn, will result in improved diagnosis rates.

Alzheimer’s Society has worked with scientists at the University of Oxford’s Big Data Institute on the app, which features a series of games designed to test specific aspects of memory and thinking that are affected in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

As World Alzheimer’s Month draws to a close, the charity is calling on the public to download the app and play the games for five minutes a day, every day for a month.

It is hoped the app can eventually be used to find people in the very early stages of the disease and develop new treatments to stop it in its tracks.

Kevin Whately, famous for starring in Inspector Morse and Lewis, became an Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador after his mum was diagnosed with dementia and has been playing the games ahead of the app’s launch today.

He said: “GameChanger is going to be a very important innovation because the more people play, the quicker we can detect what causes this awful disease. It’s fun, it’s easy, and it will really drive forward dementia research.”

Jeremy Hughes, Chief Executive at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We’ve worked hard with the Government and the NHS to increase dementia diagnosis rates but there is far more to be done.

A third of people with dementia still don’t get a diagnosis, and those who do often tell us it was a painfully slow process. A million people in the UK will have dementia by 2021, and if they can get a diagnosis quickly and accurately that will help them to live well with the disease.

“Dementia is the only one of the top ten killers that we can’t cure, prevent or even slow down, so we urgently need to better understand this devastating disease. Alzheimer’s Society is investing in research because it will beat dementia – but for research to progress, more people need to take part, and GameChanger is a great opportunity for everyone to do that.”

Dr Chris Hinds from the University of Oxford’s Big Data Institute, commented: “People using the app are just playing games but their phones are doing much more – collecting data that we can use to learn about the brain, to help us understand what is a natural part of ageing and what’s a warning sign.

“Technology can open up these hugely exciting areas of dementia research, but we need people to get involved and help drive the GameChanger project forward. Hopefully with enough support one day we will be able to spot those very early changes in the brain and stop the disease from developing.”

Beyond GameChanger, Alzheimer’s Society has a research portfolio of 182 active projects worth over £35 million this year alone, and as a founding funder of the UK Dementia Research Institute it is committed to spending at least £150m in the next decade.

May: “Brexit will give the freedom to deliver the British dream”

London (Caterina Moser) – Brexit will give Britain the “freedom to deliver the British dream”, Theresa May said in exclusive interview with Daily Express. The prime minister showed her most optimistic vision yet of how the “divorce” with Brussels will benefit the whole the country.

She said that Brexit gives the opportunity to built a better future and to realise the famous British dream. Theresa May added: “Brexit gives us opportunity to have the freedom to be able to deliver that in a way that we haven’t been before”. The freedom to spend billions of pounds on the priorities of the country.

The prime minister spoke on the eve of the EU Summit, which is taking place on 19th and 20th of September in Salzburg.

The Summit is an important step, because the British government will present the – so called – “Chequers deal”. It considers the only alternative to the no-deal. The informal Summit in Salzburg will be the first time for the EU leaders to sit together since Theresa May presented her “Chequers Brexit” proposal to them.

The Brexit deal is about the future relationships between the EU and the UK and it is putting on table “what we think is the right plan for the UK and deliver a good deal for the EU”, said Theresa May.

Regardless, the most difficult battle that May is afraid to face is at home.
From September the 30th to October the 3rd, there will be the annual Tory congress in Birmingham. During those 4 days, we will understand if the leader of the Tories has the 320 votes that they need to pass the agreement to the House of Commons.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond warned of “dire consequences” from crashing out of the EU. Siding with the International Monetary Fund, Hammond said that a no-deal Brexit risks wiping out Britain’s 10-year recovery from the economic crash. These kind of warnings have sparked new tensions between the Canchellor and the prime Minister Theresa May.

Moreover, in last few days the speculation over May’s position as prime minister became harsher. For example, at the end of August, Jacob Rees-Mogg sent a message to some Tory activists encouraging them to ditch Theresa May’s soft Brexit plan and quit the EU with no deal.

In a BBC interview, Theresa May said she gets “irritated” and the debate should be about the country’s future rather than her own.

Meanwhile, few days ago, the mayor of London Sadiq Khan called for a second Brexit Referendum. He criticised Theresa May’s handling of Brexit negotiations with EU. According to Mr Khan, time is running out and UK is now facing a “bad deal” or a “no deal”.

Regarding a second vote, Ms May is being clear: “We gave people the opportunity to make a choice. They made that choice”. Demanding a second Brexit referendum risks shattering trust in Westminster.

“This was probably the biggest exercise in democracy in our country’s history. If we were to go back on that vote, it would destroy trust in politicians” said the prime minister.

London, the upcoming world’s smart city according to Sadiq Khan

(Boerio, N. and Guida, B) – London is moving towards future faster than ever by becoming in few years time a real smart city. The Major, Sadiq Khan, announced it last January claiming his aim to make his city “the world’s leading smart city” by making it:

“[…] the global home of the data economy, to seize the benefits of new artificial intelligence, and inspire a new generation of inventors and developers to make our city even better” – he added.

According to the latest tech conferences, tech and data will make Londoners’ lives easier. Being intelligent or being fast and quick are the keys to access to a different and ‘better’ world, where people have a direct connection with their public services and it opens the doors at what it has been recently defined as the “age of cities”.

However, what would this city’s mutation practically mean?

By looking at cities such as New York, Helsinki or Seul, getting smart means improving networking and connectivity by using internet and tech tools. The cities mentioned above are applying theirselves  to specific plans that aim at making better, mainly, their strategic sectors that for years have represented their strengths.

The areas generally recognised at the moment are:

Economy: trying to position the city as a capital of the new economy increasing city’s competitiveness in global marketing to improve productivity;

People: investing in education; trying to improve citizens participation; reducing social divisions regarding education, gender, sexual orientation, health conditions and religion;

Living: achieving a high quality of life investing in health, safety and wellbeing;

Environment: increasing the use of sustainable, recyclable energy sources;

Mobility: making safer movements using connected cars, vehicle detection, traffic control, smart parking and payments.

London is focusing itself on the mobility area launching already the ” Smart London Plan“, developed under the leadership of the capital’s first Chief Digital Officer, Theo Blackwell.

The plan will be also in partnership with Bloomberg Associates and backed by a group of London councils. The goals to reach are focused on a digital collaboration across London’s boroughs and public services, improving connectivity and digital skills, in order to ensure that technology is designed around Londoners’ needs.

Most importantly the major’s will is increasing TFL (Trasport for London) to tackle not-spots – areas of poor internet provision – and provide better digital connectivity for Londoners. If successful the founding will be also invested in fibre-optic connectivity on the underground network to public buildings near to tube stations.

“The real thing that’s going to help cities is management use access to public data. There’s sort of innovation that we don’t even know of that will arise from that and so an important part of our strategy is not just traditional smart cities and smart traffic lights and things like that. But it’s actually built in the digital capability of our public institutions so that when we bring together these vast data sets that we can actually use them ” said Blackwell.

Using open data, would mean, for example, helping the National Health Service in providing services for citizens “So when we talk about serving the citizen we’re also talking about how we integrate the data that we can get around health and adult social care into the mix” he added.

Other examples of benefits coming from this smarter use of data are concerning bus routes able to track the changing way people move around London, as well as crowdsourcing pollution data to update Londoners about their local air quality in real time.

In such urban mutation, politics plays an important role too. One of the questions most asked is if Brexit could stall the tech growth of London. Most of the investments in tech and jobs are part of the EU project “Horizon 2020”.

It is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) that aims to drive economic growth and create jobs among cities member.

Horizon is not the only source of founding there are other bigger amounts of foundig available that now are under threat from Brexit.

The vision in not clear yet, but the UK government assures that these changes will not affect negatively the city’s growth and that a favorable agreement is going to be made.

Nevertheless such important economic and tech growth, 62% out of 4000 interviewed during our public survey said they are not aware of such city’s mutatuation. Having explained to them what being a smart city mean, 29% asserted that they do not like what is happening because it could meand undermining their privacy more than it is undermined at the moment.

The other 71%, instead, are positive about such London improvement. Just in few years time we will see the results an determining who was right or not, but what is clear is that a huge tech  development is currently undergoing.

“Winnie the Pooh” will return to the scene with the new Marc Forster’s movie

London (Elisabetta Steri and Erica Atzeni) – The most known teddy bear “Winnie the Pooh” will return to the scene with the new Marc Forster’s movie “Christopher Robin”.

It will be released on 17th August in the UK’s cinemas, while in Italy will be out on 30th August. The Scottish actor Ewan McGregor has been chosen as the main protagonist who is Christopher Robin, son of A.A Milne (Winnie the Pooh’s English author), who was born in the same month of the movie realising.

The movie deals with the story of the famous kid Christopher Robin, who forgot his imagination over the years while he was becoming a man. So, we could see Christopher spending most of his life working and risking to totally forget the most important values: family and happiness.

That is why Winnie comes to life again with its friends by trying to bring him back to the right way and help him remembering the the happy adventures they lived together in the One hundred acred Wood.

Will Pooh and her friends reach their goal? Wait and see. Meanwhile we can take a look at the most curious aspects of the most famous teddy of the world.

The woods, in which the story takes place, is inspired by the country house where Milne used to live, in Ashdown forest, south est of England.

Winnie’s stuffed animal is incredibly successful in the whole world and it is in the second place of the “Most sold puppets for children” chart, after Mickey Mouse.

Just a few people know that the original peluche doesn’t look like the one we can see today on TV. The original Winnie was manufactured by Margarete Steiff in 1906-10 and a copy of it was exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum from 7th December 2017 to 18th April 2018 in London, where an entire exhibition about Milne and his teddy bear was attracting thousands of people.

Winnie the Pooh has got million of fans, starting from the Royal Family including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Harry. Before the Disney movie’s announcement, this year Prince Harry bought the first edition of Winnie The Pooh book by A.A. Milne spending about £8000.00 for his nephew’s (Prince Louis) christening last July.

Now will be again on the screen stealing children and adults’ hearts as it has kept doing it for a long time.
