BARBARA PANETTA – Chloe’s Promise

(by Stefania Del Monte)

Barbara Panetta is the author of Chloe’s Promise, an alluring new children’s book and video initially raising funds in favour of the NHS and now supporting Momentum Children’s Charity.

Originally from Italy, Barbara is currently based in Richmond, Surrey, where she lives with her husband, two children and a golden retriever. This is not her first book: her language studies and interest in psychology drew her to write her first novel Ricordi in movimento (2015). She also curated several publications.

We are eager to find out how the idea of Chloe’s Promise was born:

It was all very sudden! – reveals Barbara – One day I was in my garden listening to one of my daughters practising the piano, when I noticed a column of ants struggling to collect a biscuit crumb that had fallen to the ground. This set my thoughts in motion and the idea for Chloe’s Promise germinated”.

Author Barbara Panetta

Once the story had been outlined, Barbara worked together with children’s psychologist Giovanna Campolo to ensure that the words used and the morals were appropriate for children of three years and above. The result is a charming, illustrative work that is sure to engage any child.

The story – she explains – is about a little ant named Chloe and her brothers and sisters. The main focus is the relationship between adults and young children, and especially the ways in which they both learn to trust and respect each other and the choices they make”.

The book is enriched by beautiful illustrations sketched by Barbara, who is not an illustrator but used her passion to produce some pretty drawings. She has used watercolour rather than digital processing, to keep it as simple as possible.

Later, graphic designer Aurelio Scalabroni intentionally added spots of colour in most of the pages, giving the impression of an unfinished work and sharing with readers the idea that nothing is perfect.

Through such illustrations and the use of simple language, children can therefore identify with the main characters, comparing themselves to hard working, determined and disciplined ants.

Chloe’s Promise aims to raise charity funds:

“Since the beginning – affirms Barbara – my intention was to support storytelling at home between parents and children during the COVID-19 crisis. I believe that at difficult times we can all contribute, in different ways. I also really wanted to help children in need, therefore all profits generated from the book are donated to a local registered charity called Momentum Children’s Charity, who is supporting children with cancer or life challenging conditions. I wish my book could bring a big smile to all those unfortunate children”.

This is both a print and a video book benefiting from the collaboration of Ben Shephard, presenter of ITV’s Good Morning Britain and Tipping Point, who proudly agreed to narrate the story, and musician Alessandro Viale, author of the soundtrack.

Viale talks enthusiastically of this special project:

It has been a lot of fun! – he says – This involved composing, selecting and performing. Because of the lockdown, I had to find creative ways to work without moving from home. This is why I ended up recording on a very ancient English Broadwood square piano made in 1815. I tended to play different pieces according to my mood and, when inspiration struck, compose something new. Therefore, I identified with the little ant Chloe and with all the feelings emerging from the story. She loves Chopin (and Tchaikovsky) but, sometimes, she just reacts to what happens by putting her hands on the piano and improvising”.

Barbara, whose daughters both play the piano and the cello since they were three years old, agrees with Viale in believing that it is very important for children to familiarise with music from an early age:

“I think music can help to express the vast amount of new emotions that a child undergoes while growing. I am very happy that little Chloe decided to spend her day relaxing and playing the piano: no surprise that the day after she was able to work even harder!”.

CLAUDIO GUERRINI – Once upon a (first) time

by Stefania Del Monte

RDS radio presenter, correspondent for La Prova del Cuoco on Rai1, presenter and commentator on TV programs,  collaborator of the weekly magazine Vero, animator and deejay of musical and cultural events and, recently, also author with the book C’era una prima volta (Once upon a first time): Claudio Guerrini, one of the most well-known and appreciated voices on the Italian national radio scene, is a polyhedric and versatile figure. We met him to talk about his professional career, mirror of a multifaceted and unstoppable personality.

Claudio, you made your professional radio debut, quickly joining national radio networks. Is that what you always wanted to do or did you have other dreams as a child?

I had many, maybe too many dreams. In a few years I cherished the dream of being a tennis player, commentator, journalist, deejay, radio and television presenter. I was a little confused, I admit it. I tried to do everything, some things I did well, some others I didn’t. But it could have been worse…

Your program within the RDS program is very popular. Can you tell us more about it?

It’s a program born when I started conducting early afternoon, first alone, then with Rosaria Renna. Over time, the first imitations, the first squabbles, the first columns were born almost by chance. We immediately had an excellent response from the public and so, when Rosaria abandoned me to go to RMC, I asked the management to continue the journey with Roberta Lanfranchi: she and the company accepted and for three years we have been on the air with the Guerrini & Lanfranchi Show.

This year marks your twenty years of collaboration with RDS. What has changed in the way of doing radio, from 2000 to today?

Really??? So many! I didn’t know, thanks for the news! The main difference is the increasing interaction with the web and now with social networks. Once when I played music I rested, now I take pictures, stories, manage Facebook or Instagram both for the radio profiles and for my personal. Practically a double job!

In 2006 you made your television debut. What attracted you to the small screen?

The ability to express myself in different ways. The radio is always fascinating but more repetitive, it is based precisely on the familiarity and affection of listeners. On TV you can happen to do completely different things, sometimes opposite. I acted in the candid camera, I was a columnist, a judge, I recited poems, I conducted a program on cinema, a sportsman, I worked for La prova del cuoco and Buono a sapersi on Rai1. .. I like to express myself in different ways, I believe that versatility is one of my (few?) strengths.

Besides doing radio and television, you also do a lot of other things. Can you tell us about them?

Well, to be able to speak directly with many people, first of all you need to get informed, so I read everything, I get daily information from the websites of the main Italian and international newspapers. Then books, films (especially from the 60s and 70s), sports and, of course, I keep my social profiles updated.

Your first book was recently released, entitled C’era una (prima) volta/Once upon a (first) time. What is it about?

It is an almost educational book. Thanks to the direct testimonies of the protagonists, I have told the professional beginnings of many successful characters, from Enrico Mentana to Giuliano Malagò, Noemi, Sandra Milo, Paolo Genovese, Michele Guardì, Dario Ballantini, Paolo Rossi and many others. Funny, moving stories came out, all very interesting.

How was the idea born?

From the questions of many listeners and followers, who often ask me how you can start making radio or TV. Instead of responding individually to each of them, I came up with the idea of writing a book, telling not only my story, but also that of many personalities who have been successful in their respective professional fields.

Of all the characters interviewed in your career, is there anyone who has impressed you more than others?

The story of my friend Francesca Stella, the least known but the strongest of all! Her battle against a terrible disease, first discovered a year ago, is a wonderful example for all of us.

Can you share with us some curious anecdote?

One of many is that of Paolo Genovese, who won his first short film competition thanks to a sensational mistake by a technician. So he went from the deepest discomfort to the first big success of his life. From which his great career started. So never give up!

Are there any new projects on the horizon?

Many, but this mandatory quarantine must first pass. I am taking advantage of it to write, plan, imagine. Meanwhile, I conduct the radio program from home and every night at 9 pm I interview many characters live on my Instagram profile. A big good luck to all of us to start again as soon as possible.

No more deadlines. Is it really the end? The final goodbye is near for the UK

London – the final date for the UK to leave the EU – is here within two months! The Hungarian composer and entrepreneur’s Brexit-inspired music has never been more actual then now!

The British exit if the European Union is the most significant economic agreement between major economies since the Second World War and much about the forthcoming process of transitioning out of the EU has no precedent. Both the UK and the EU will be significantly changed by what is about to unfold economically, socially and in every aspect of our life.

It is no wonder that this historical event urges many battels of opinion, emotional turmoil and even inspire artists who feel the urgent need to express the opinion of hundred thousand of people through their art! Mr Joseph Felföldi Hungarian composer and entrepreneur mogul, the founder of a Hungarian food company was one of the first artist who responded to this life changing significant act of the UK.

In the immediate wake of the 2016 shock UK decision to leave the European Union, Hungarian film and music producer Joseph Felföldi felt moved to compose a musical response entitled “Brexit Ballet”.

The composer has strong business links to the UK so he wanted to express the mixed feelings of Europeans that he felt were missing from the discussion. Felföldi’s music video was uploaded to YouTube 2 years ago and gained almost a million views. More than half of the views came from English-speaking countries, with most of the rest from European Union countries.

Mr Felföldi feels the near-one-million views and countless comments have vindicated his video project and he hope it will continue to draw attention to the importance of international political awareness as the world enters an ever more turbulent period of change.

No-deal Brexit has never loomed larger than in the current moment. Boris Johnson has said that Britain will leave the European Union on 31st of October. His entire political strategy is based on the credibility of his threat to follow through, regardless of whether he has come to an agreement with the remaining 27 members.

A no-deal Brexit means the UK would leave the European Union immediately on 31stOctober 2019, and there would be no agreements in place about what the relationship between the UK and the EU will be like in future. This includes special agreements about how UK and EU companies could work and do trade with each other. A lot of companies have said they are worried about not knowing exactly how their businesses will work if there is a no-deal Brexit at the end of October.

“ I sympathise with the people of the UK, I respect their their decision to leave the EU”  Mr Felföldi says, “ I would even go further and say that I don’t think the British people’s vote to leave was a mistake, but that the leaders have made a mess of it since.”

Joseph Felföldi’s song is inspired by the English ballad tradition, with the lyrics identifying themes that Europeans associate with Britain: A misty island, at once nearby and distant; a proud seafaring nation with a long history; and a complex destiny intertwined with that of Europe. Out of respect, Felfoldi sings the lyrics in English, himself.

The choreography is arranged by Zsuzsa Laczó of the Csokonai Theater in Debrecen, with dancer Kitti Gall playing Britannia on a bare stage. The narrative evokes a combination of admiration, beauty, trauma, and sorrow.

“With our eyes on Britain now, it creates an opportunity for self-reflection and wider reflection, too: Where we come from, where we are now and where we are heading to politically, physically and spiritually. These are significant questions we should contemplate and we should act if we don’t like the picture.” – explains Felföldi.”

Felföldi is a Hungarian businessman and founder of a candy company which exports across Europe and the world, with the U.K. representing one of its strongest partners. He also writes and produces songs and poetry. He lost one of his eyes in an accident when he was 14 years old. “At this time, his sister gave him his first guitar; his affinity and commitment to music, literature and arts has accompanied his every waking moment since,” the statement says.

Are Ferrari Living Off Past Reputation In Formula One?

No team has been more successful in the history of Formula One than Ferrari. The Italian outfit’s 16 Constructors’ Championships set them apart from the rest of the field. However, the rise of Red Bull Racing and Mercedes Racing in the past decade has resulted in a 10-year drought for the once dominant team. Ferrari have tried several drivers in their bid to regain their hold at the top of the sport, but they’ve not managed to find a combination to claim the title.

The last two Ferrari drivers to combine to win the crown were Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen, although neither was able to enjoy individual success in the 2008 campaign as Lewis Hamilton lifted the Drivers’ Championship for McLaren. In the years since the Italian outfit have been blown away by first the quality of Red Bull as Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber enjoyed a run of four straight crowns. Hamilton and Nico Rosberg then took command for Mercedes, matching the exploits of their rivals by triumphing for four years in a row.

Bottas then joined Hamilton for Mercedes’ fifth win in as many years and they appear to be on course for a sixth crown in the 2019 campaign. Mercedes hold an imperious lead in the early stages of the season, with Ferrari being backed at 14/1 in the latest F1 odds to end their stranglehold of the Constructors’ Championship. Vettel and Charles LeClerc have been solid enough on the circuit this term, but have not managed to produce a victory yet, leaving them with an uphill challenge for the rest of the term to haul in Mercedes’ lead.

Vettel did finish ahead of Hamilton at the Canadian Grand Prix. However, the German saw his win chalked off by the FIA after being accused of dangerous driving, re-joining the track in an unsafe manner along with forcing Hamilton off the circuit. The result epitomised Ferrari’s start to the season, failing to make the inroads that the team would have wanted after their underwhelming decade behind Mercedes and Red Bull. The Italian outfit have experimented with different drivers, luring Vettel away from Red Bull in 2014. At the time, the German was on a run that only the legendary Michael Schumacher has matched, winning four world titles on the spin.

It was expected that Vettel would go from strength to strength with Ferrari and surpass his compatriot as the most successful driver in the history of the sport. However, Vettel has not come close to challenging for the crown since as Hamilton has taken up the mantle and is now in pursuit of Schumacher’s record. Ferrari have been unable to give their star man a car that is capable of matching Mercedes, despite spending significant resources on improving their vehicles.

They’ve struggled for consistency, while the Italian outfit have also not been able to match the modifications made by their rivals mid-season. Vettel’s form has tailed off dramatically in his five seasons with Ferrari, which has made the crucial difference in the race for the title, especially over the last two years.

No matter who has been behind the wheel at Ferrari – whether it be Fernando Alonso, Vettel, Massa or Raikkonen – it has not yielded success for the team over the last 10 years. LeClerc may be the next great hope, but at the moment Ferrari are living off their past reputation rather than their quality on the track.

Why Italy is the 5 Tourist Country in the World

It’s official: according to a report by the World Tourism Organization Italy is one of the most popular travel destinations around the globe, receiving over 58 million visitors in 2017 alone. Placed as it is in the centre of the Mediterranean, a hub of western culture, it’s not hard to imagine why.

From the ancient holdfast of Rome to the bastion of Syracuse on the isle of Sicily, Italy has always been famous for its classics; many of its cities have stood for millennia, with grand monuments such as the Colosseum and the ruins of Pompeii standing tall thousands of years after the fall of the original Roman empire.

Tourists come from far and wide to visit such sites, and rarely leave disappointed.

Within the capital city itself sits the Vatican, the living heart of the Catholic faith. It welcomes visitors from all over the world into its halls, an independent state in its own right decorated from floor to grand ceiling with beautiful artistry and architecture.

In Florence, the 600 year old Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore stands tall and majestic.

In Pisa, Galileo’s leaning tower leans, a living testament to science and history.

Up and down the country the remains of ancient aqueducts can be seen, and in Rome the 18th century Trevi Fountain is carved glorious, especially beautiful on bright sunny days. The remnants of the Romans are one thing – the remnants of the renaissance can often be even more astounding.

The Culture

If there’s one thing above all that attracts the tourist crowd to Europe’s boot however, it’s the culture of the people living there. An on the ground experience in Italy is proof enough – there’s character on every corner, from local restaurants to the railway system to coffee snobbery. Even Italy’s lottery is bombastic; the SuperEnalotto at Lottoland sees three weekly draws with no cap on rollovers, meaning giant, exciting, enthusiastic national wins

The Sun and the Sports

It’s not all museums and monuments in Italy, however – far from it. The country is just as famous for its mountains, skiing, football and water sports. With long, balmy summers and beautiful beaches many tourists come to the country solely for the weather alone relative to the time of year.

Image: Pexels

385 Italian beaches were awarded the prestigious ‘blue flag,’ award for clean waters in 2019 – meaning the country holds 10% of all flags in the world.

Compared to nearby neighbouring countries Russia and France, Italy has 349 separate skiing locations, whereas France only has 325, and Russia only 321.

Wine tours are available up, down and throughout the countryside and family resorts and villas draw guests in by the thousands every year. Without a doubt, Italy is just as good for a relaxing holiday as a learned one.

From pizza to pasta to the upbeat tune of the Italian language, Italy’s culture is beloved the whole world over for its energy and warmth. Combined with the grandeur of ancient history, and it’s easy to understand why the country remains one of the best to visit in the world.
