i2i – Italians to Italians, 30 investments in start ups and more to come

i2i – Italians to Italians -London, Shangri – La Hotel at the Shard, March 7th 2016
The London based Italian Venture Capital Company opens its second year with a road show between Milan and London: an opportunity to launch its latest investment, the new international version of the prestigious Sailing Series, soon crowdfunding on Seedrs.com

i2i, the London based Venture Capital arm of The Family Officer Group, announces the results of its first year of activities, its first 30 investments and goes international with the prestigious and successful format ‘Sailing Series’.

Based in London since 1999, The Family Officer Group, launched i2i in December 2014 as a response to the opportunity offered by the recent massive influx of Italians in the United Kingdom. i2i invests in Italian entrepreneurs incorporating their business in London and starting from here their international expansion.

i2i received a first capital injection of 510,000 pounds, later increased to more than 4 M pounds, still exclusively financed by The Family Officer Group. This allowed i2i to close more than 30 deals in one year versus the 12 originally targeted.
For 2016 i2i has already committed extra 1.8 M pounds.

The presentation of this amazing year, on the 7th March at the Shangri La Hotel at the Shard, will also correspond to the launch of the crowdfunding campaign on Seedrs.com of the latest investment of i2i: Sailing Series.

Sailing Series, company founded by the international sailing champion and Olympic athlete Riccardo Simoneschi, is a format of sailing events with 20 years of successful media and financial results.
In 2015 the Series involved 240 international teams, 20 European races and 150,000 spectators with an extensive media coverage in more than 40 countries.
For the 2016 Series there will be the addition of a new class on the top of the successful Melges: the innovative M32 catamarans with a new race format and a larger public exposure.

BPSE, the company controlling the format, moved to London from Milan with the aim to increase its visibility, international partnerships, investments in the technology and media so much needed to take the Series to the next level.

The crowdfunding event, targeting a minimum of 250,000 pounds, aims to accelerate this evolution and the value generation.

Pianist without borders: or the incredible story of Fabio Tedde

London – Pianos. Streets, continents, miles. Sleepless nights, crossing stories, enthusiasm, love. It is hard to sum up in just few words the story of Fabio Tedde (you can find him on facebook as Pianist Without Borders).

We met him one day, while he was performing at Green Park Station, in the London Underground. Something magic hailed from his music. Something rare. So we decided to have a chat with him.

And we fell for his life story. So thrilling, so brave, so full of hope. Everything begin 15 years ago, when Fabio’s farmer daily life in a small village called Magomadas in Oristano province (Sardinia, Italy) is interrupted by the fate. A lottery leads him on an unexptected journey in Egypt. And on the way back the intuition that is going to change his life forever: he is in the airport about to fly home when he realizes he can’t speak English at all.

Not a single word. He can’t even order his sandwich at the bar. A change is needed. In a second he decides to quit his previous life and to move to London. Where he would learn English and explore the world. The beginning of his londoner life is a classic one. Italian? «Pizzaiolo». During 7 months he works as a pizza- maker.

But the fate knocks to his door soon again. He is enjoying a Piccadilly ordinary night when the music of some african musicians steals his heart. He spends the whole night playing with them on the street. And since then every night he goes there to fill the night with rhythm – no matter what, no matter “tomorrow 5 am you start working”.

African music changes his life and so he decides to go to Africa – to learn traditional rhythms from native African masters. And now, that he is not only a great percussionist but also a fantastic pianist and composer, he want to bring a piano to rural African villages outside the big cities creating spontaneous moments using the music as a universal language.

“Fabio he has played over 770 street public pianos around the world, all designed by local artists, his mission and purpose is to take down the barriers among the people, to connect them in a musical environment where there are no roles: you can play, other can sing, other dance, everyone can provide their artistic skills in an atmosphere of fraternity that his smile and humbleness promote naturally.”

To do his African tour Fabio would like to find a sponsor. A sponsor that makes him able to get a van with a lift to travel across Africa and bring his music in the wildest corners of the World. Even better if the sponsor is an «eco-friendly one» – says Fabio – as «I don’t want to produce anymore pollution».

For a dream still to come another one is already on the move, spreading all across the world. We are talking about the project Global Public Pianos, co-founded by Fabio Tedde and Delphine Orliange (https://www.facebook.com/groups/globalpublicpianos): GPP is a movement promoting the idea of using pianos to transform public spaces into freely accessible auditoriums that allow people of all walks of life to connect through music «Public pianos enrich the entire community around them.

It is something unique and incredibly powerful» – explains Fabio. In all those years of crazy love and passion for music and for connecting with people, Fabio met so many amazing people and has countless stories to share.

«One night I was playing in Brooklyn, New York, after playing all night with my friends a homeless passed by as he heard the music from the park.

At the beginning he was just listening me to play, and then he started singing on my music. He was originally from Poland and, when young, he was playing the accordion at the weddings, as a Polish friend there translated for us.

At a certain moment he said he knew an italian song, that he started to sing in polish but the refrain was in italian “Che sara’ della mia vita che sara’…what will it be of my life what will it be…”.

He sang , I played. It was a surprised for all of us there , and we enjoyed each other musical skills for about two hours. In his eyes you could read the joy that music sent to him straight to his heart and soul, tears of joy i would say, and he has also touched my heart deep and it was a true honor for me to play and share the music and spent some quality time together.

Paris 2He thanked me so much for this magic moment but really the one who should thank is me to him for giving us a sense of simple and beautiful emotions, that touched deeply all of us there. I think that evening was so full of beautiful emotions that, for the few people there, will stay in our memory forever ».

If you are in London have a look @ King’s Cross station. You might meet Fabio playing there. Or maybe we will find him in Italy, where public pianos are getting their way.

Or maybe you will meet him in Nepal, or in South America. He simply doesn’t know where he will be in the future, but he won’t stop spreading music. No managers, no labels, no employers: Fabio will keep being wild and free. Giving his music, his passion, his love to the world. A story almost incredible, but true. Believe it or not: music can be a real miracle!

People in London believe drivers of small cars are safest on the road

 – People in London and the South East believe drivers of small and compact cars are the safest on the road, new research conducted on behalf of TomTom Telematics has revealed. The study, which addressed more than 1,000 Brits1, revealed that 23 per cent of people from London and the South East selected drivers of small and compact cars as the safest and most careful road users.

They were closely followed by drivers of saloon cars (20 per cent), while bus and coach drivers came in third with 16 per cent and cabbies finished fourth (13 per cent). High performance/sports car drivers finished joint bottom of the list, selected as the safest by just six per cent of respondents. Truck drivers (seven per cent), van drivers (eight per cent) and SUV drivers (nine per cent) rounded out the bottom four. Small and compact car drivers also topped the list of the most polite and courteous road users, taking 20 per cent of the vote.

Saloon car drivers came second with 18 per cent, while bus and coach drivers came third (16 per cent) and cabbies were fourth (10 per cent). Drivers of high performance/sports cars and truck drivers finished bottom of the list, each selected as the most polite and courteous by just three per cent of respondents, closely followed by van drivers (four per cent).

The research also outlined a significant challenge for businesses, as 67 per cent of people from London and the South East said they would be less inclined to do business with a company if they saw its drivers behaving in an unsafe or discourteous manner on the roads. Commenting on the results, Taco van der Leij, VP Marketing at TomTom Telematics, said: “More than 1.4 million people are killed or injured on Europe’s roads each year2, so all road users have a responsibility to improve driving standards. Technology also has a key role to play and modern telematics already provides drivers with real-time coaching and feedback on driving style to help them improve.

TomTom Telematics is committed to raising driving standards through its fleet management systems for businesses and connected car technology for motorists.” Van der Leij continued: “It’s also important for companies to understand the impact that poor driving standards have on their reputations.

It’s easy to overlook the fact that their vehicle fleets are all branded and the behaviour of their drivers can have a significant impact on how other road users view them. By empowering employees to drive more safely through access to the appropriate training and technological aids, businesses can in fact enhance their brands.”

St. Patrick day Failte go Eireann: welcome to Ireland!

London – On 17th March, London goes green and celebrates the Irish patron with music, dancing and rivers of beer.
However, who was he? First, we need to dispel the common myth about its origins: St. Patrick was not Irish, but Briton, or maybe Gaul.
Pirates kidnapped him and taken in the green land of Ireland, where he remained for a few years until he managed to escape and return to his family. photo  montaigne.altervista.org]
Then he developed his missionary vocation and decided to come back to the places of his slavery so to preach Christianity.
He began a real religious instruction path that led him to be consecrated bishop of Ireland.
So many overly laudatory legends revolve around his figure.
Definitely famous among these is the one that gives him a vision in which Christ would show a cave, better known as the famous St. Patrick’s well that the saint would have crossed, catching a glimpse of Paradise, after the pains of Purgatory and Hell.
It seems that this miraculous event took place on a small island of Lough Derg, North West Ireland and right there, a church was built where you can find many pilgrims especially during summertime.
Beyond the legends, the feast dedicated to Saint Patrick crosses national borders and goes all over the world, and London is obviously ready to celebrate it with dignity.
Last year the event gathered more than 100 thousand people in the city.
Celebrations strictly take place the Sunday before the big day: on the 13th of March, Trafalgar Square becomes the perfect theatre to revelry, with entertainment shows, movies, Irish music and dancing of course.
The parade will start from Piccadilly at midday to continue on Lower Regent Street, Pall Mall East, Whitehall and Trafalgar.
For those who are interested, you can actively take part at the show by registering on www.eventbrite.co.uk site.
Expect a great pomp, floats, marching bands from all over the United Kingdom, sport clubs, dance schools and groups representing as many as possible Irish counties.

The Irish community relocated under the Big Ben is certainly numerous and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day inevitably means to stop by one of the many Irish pubs around the city to enjoy a pint of Guinness.
For the occasion, the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith offers a discussion on social change in modern Ireland with the extraordinary participation of the former President of Ireland Mary McAleese, interviewed by Fergan Kean, writer and correspondent for the BBC. Appointment on Thursday 10th of March at 7.30 pm, City Hall, the Queen’s Walk.

ABC ECONOMICS held its first Understanding Brexit conference

London – on Saturday 20 February at the University of Westminster, ABC ECONOMICS held its first Understanding Brexit conference.

Approximately 70 people attended the event, comprising working professionals, entrepreneurs, academics, students and members of MIE (Movimento Italiano in Europa) and the London European Club.

The event – moderated by Paola De Pascali – was also broadcasted live by LondonOneRadio, with an average of 100 people tuned in at all times.

The conference featured a number of keynote speakers.

Luigi Jacopo Borrello, an academic lecturer, outlined the reasons for a in-out referendum, analysing the political scenarios and how the EU-UK relationship is likely to change in case of Brexit.

Giulia Carnà, a contract lawyer, described the framework around Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, explaining the procedures the EU members need to adhere to in order to terminate their membership.

After the coffee break (courtesy of Luadan Future Trade), Stefano Francesco Fugazzi (founder of ABC Economics and author of the bestseller ‘Brexit?’) spoke on the impacts of immigration on occupational wages, presenting the conclusions of a recent Bank of England research paper. Mr Fugazzi observed that “if the UK were to leave the EU, the costs arising from EU regulations would not disappear at all as actually much would depend on what path Britain took outside the EU.

If the UK were to leave the EU to join the European Economic Area (the EEA), it is believed that approximately 93 per cent of the EU’s key regulations would continue to apply.”

Claudio Calogiuri (Solicitor, Partner of Mentor Legal LLP Solicitors) illustrated how immigration law and policies may change under a Brexit scenario. Additionally, Mr Calogiuri remarked on the role of EU nationals in supporting the UK economy.

Conference contents will be published by ABC Economics in due course.
