Napolislam: ten stories of Italians converted

Cinema Italia UK has begun the season for the 2016 with a great screening: the documentary filmed by Ernesto Pagano about the relationship between Naples and Islam
After a great and successful 2015, Cinema Italia UK has begun its season for the 2016 own on Sunday 17 January presenting the screening of the last work of the director Ernesto Pagano.

Ernesto Pagano, journalist, translator from Arabic and documentaries filmmaker, graduated in Islamic and Arabic studies in Naples, from 2005 to 2008 lived at Cairo when worked as correspondent for various newspapers and translator for the weekly “Internazionale”. Currently the director Pagano collaborates with Report, program TV of RAI 3, and National Geographic.

Thanks to that period of three years lived in Egypt, he improved even more his already high knowledge about the Arabic language and the Muslim religion, so decided to start a journey across the areas of Naples for showing us that also in Italy, country famous for being a stronghold of Christianity, there is a piece of Cairo.

In fact Pagano with his camera has gone through the boroughs and the streets of Naples and has unveiled the truth around an incredible reality.
Entering inside the homes and lives of ten Italians who converted to Islam, Ernesto Pagano through their own voices, explain us what pushed them to this important choice.

 

 

Naples is a tough city and mostly in these last years the quality of life is gone down. For this reason with their conversion, those ten Italians have wanted to seek a true response to social injustices and with their approaching to Islamic religion , they found a solution for a better life.

In fact watching this interesting documentary emerges one aspect; who converted to Islam is experiencing his conversion as a true passage to another style of life. Furthermore as the same director Pagano has released in other interviews, this ten people who have converted to Islam are normal people that simply wanted to receive a better response from the daily life.
This deep and important change is not only changing the customs of themselves but also the people who revolve around them like: friends, colleagues and members of family.
In this documentary Pagano focused his attention only to ten Italian converted, however the phenomenon is wider than this. Naples has always been a multicultural city and for this reason has always been hosting news from all over the world.

This is the demonstration that Naples and it’s inhabitants observe, analyse and judge every thing that arrives from abroad because Naples, before to reject anything, wants to know and understand better it.

The largest fair in the UK featuring over 80 independent artists from 33 Countries During the last few months the organisers of ARTROOMS have issued a casting call to a diverse selection of artists from across the globe.

The outcome has enabled the arrangement of a resolutely unique event that features the largest collection of independent, artistic talents in one centralised location.

ARTROOMS enables emerging artists to exhibit within a grand space and thus provides an irreplaceable platform of visibility in central London.

70 rooms at Meliá White House, a top four-star deluxe hotel next to Regent’s Park, will be transformed into innovative show spaces throughout a four-day period of London Arts Fair.

The team behind ARTROOMS incorporates established experts and recognised sponsors including Contini Art UK, Artfinder, Le Dame Art Gallery, Konnii, Brownhill Insurance, Celeste Prize, Useum and Belluzzo and Partners, among others. We also benefit from the involvement of various charities including the celebrated WellChild organisation. Among Special Guests, artists Andrea Sampaolo, Paolo Vegas, Marieke Kruger, Martin Reed, Will Thomson and Lorenzo Belenguer. Following the success of last year’s event, the bar is set very high for this year’s fair. A carefully constructed programme enables the in-house curation of each wing alongside featured commission projects from prestigious guest artists.

ARTROOMS will also host a series of panel discussions and artist talks curated by Marine Tanguy Art. For the Art Projects section “Arts vs Science & Technology”, Artrooms is thrilled to offer visitors an entirely immersive exhibition experience with new tech involved as Virtual Reality (gyroscopic 360-degree immersive video and Oculus Rift glasses) by team SpheresVR for the project Refugeand Video Mapping by Diego Loreggian together with special guest artistMichele Tombolini.

In the same section, 2 more guest artists: Peter Crnokrak, multi awarded London based computational artist and Daniela Papadia, presenting a beautiful 12 meters tapestry reproducing the Human Genoma.

Refuge, a collective exhibition hosted by Le Dame Art Gallery (also based at the Meliá White House and Event Partner of Artrooms). Using different approaches, various voices, film, photography, sculpture and installation this group of international artists respond to the recent migrant crisis.

Music by Roger Eno. ARTROOMS will host an invitation-only preview on 22 January 2016 and will open to the general public from 23 – 25 January 2016. Cristina Cellini Antonini, ARTROOMS founder, commented, “we decided to make the event exclusive to independent artists with the hope that galleries would be happy to sponsor this as a hunting ground rather than a showcase”. Have been published the first official images about the first series TV produced by Netflix in United Kingdom. The announcement is come during an important day for Netflix, in fact just yesterday the streaming media company launched its new global service that will touch 130 new countries in every part of the world.

The series TV, entirely produced by Netflix, will be entitled “The Crown” and will be focused about the young Queen Elizabeth II and her first steps toward the achievement of Monarchy power.

“The Crown” tells the history of the young twenty-five year old Queen leading the oldest and powerful Monarchy in the world and her attempts to get the respect of the charismatic prime minister Winston Churchill.

After the World War Two, although the United Kingdom had won the war, the country had lost all its wealth and international authority. The Great Colonial Empire was ending and the weight of England in the foreign relations was lighter than earlier.

Therefore the new series TV “The Crown”, that will be split in ten episodes, is focused own on this complicated period for the old British monarchy and will help us to understand better how the young Queen Elizabeth II was able to restore the fortunes of Great Britain and its Reign.

Tracey Curtis-Taylor has carried out her long journey across the world reaching just yesterday Sydney.

Flying on her, 1942 Boeing Stearman Spirit of Artemis aircraft, over 23 countries and making some 50 refuelling stops, yesterday she is finally arrived at the destination. She wanted to follow the footsteps of the famous pioneering and English aviatrix Amy Johnson.

Amy Johnson achieved a world fame during the 30s and 40s for being the first woman pilot, or in the language of the time, “aviatrix”, to fly solo from England to Australia. Furthermore during the years of the War World Two she wanted to give her contribute to the British military effort for this reason Amy took part in several missions joining at the newly formed ATA, Air Transport Auxiliary.

Unfortunately during a flight over the Thames Estuary she had serious problems with the engine of her airplane and could not avoid the crash. In that day of 1941 the weather conditions were very heavy, there were rough sea, strong tide, snow and an intensely cold. She died but her achievements have been written on the books of history and they will be keep for ever.

As demonstration of her unbelievable fame, Tracey Curtis-Taylor picked the challenge up of that fearless aviatrix and decided to repeat the great journey carried out more of eighty years ago by Amy Johnson.

The pioneer woman Curtis-Taylor took off from Farnborough, Hampshire, in October and after a lot of weeks of flight, she landed just yesterday in Sydney. During her flight she crossed huge space such as: Mediterranean Sea, a part of Middle East, the Arabian desert, the Gulf of Oman to Pakistan, India and Asia.

 

Finally when Tracey landed in Sydney, She could show all her joy for this great adventure and thanked everyone who supported her during this intercontinental challenge.

Lumiere London, 14th-17th January 2016

Westminster Abbey, BAFTA 195 Piccadilly, and the Granary Building at King’s Cross amongst locations set to shine in first ever Lumiere London. Full programme and locations revealed for spectacular four-night event that will chase away the January blues and show the city in a new light.

The full programme for London’s first Lumiere light festival has been revealed today, a brand new event that is set to transform the city’s streets and buildings across four evenings this month.

Developed by creative producers Artichoke and supported by the Mayor of London, Lumiere London runs from 14th-17th January 2016, 6.30-10.30pm.

Free to attend, the festival will re-imagine London’s urban landscape and architecture in 30 artworks across four main areas: King’s Cross; Mayfair and Grosvenor Square; Piccadilly, Regent Street, Leicester Square and St James’s; and Trafalgar Square and Westminster.

With founding support from Atom Bank, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Heart of London Business Alliance, London & Partners and King’s Cross, plus additional support from a host of partners and sponsors, including Westminster City Council, Lumiere London will transform parts of London’s West End and King’s Cross into a glittering pedestrian playground.

Lumiere London aims to attract Londoners and tourists alike into the heart of the capital during what is traditionally one of the quieter months of the year.

Festival visitors are being encouraged to explore the dazzling night-time gallery on foot, discovering parts of the capital for the first time and seeing familiar sights in a new light.

There are easy walking routes between many of the 30 exhibits and plenty of opportunities to stay and linger over a drink or a meal at the many venues and attractions along the way.

Suggested walking routes include: from Leicester Square through to Trafalgar Square and Westminster Abbey; from Piccadilly Circus to Grosvenor Square via Piccadilly Arcade and St James’s; along Regent Street via Carnaby to Oxford Circus; and from Euston Road to King’s Cross, Granary Square and beyond.

21% of Londoners have lost pension pots

 With 21% of working Londoners losing track of pensions and 12% not even being able to locate the relevant paperwork, accountants are urging individuals to make a resolution in 2016 to find their missing funds.1 According to London chartered accountants, Perrys there are an estimated 1.3 million people in London who have lost pensions and a further 750,000 who have misplaced their paperwork.

The average pension pot is currently worth around £43,000 at retirement. Jane Collins from Putney is one such individual who was unaware that she held a pension from a previous employment. “I had changed jobs a few times and had completely forgotten I had been contributing to a company pension previously – it wasn’t even something that crossed my mind when I handed in my notice and left the company. “It was only years later when I was moving home that I discovered the original paperwork.” Stewart Pope, CEO at Perrys Chartered Accountants in Central London, said: “Tracing a lost pension certainly isn’t a lost cause.

There are a number of things an individual can do in order to find out if they have a pension. “If they believe their pension was through the NHS, Civil Service, teaching or armed forces then they should contact the pension provider directly. Alternatively they can trace a pension using the Department for Works & Pensions’ free online pension tracing facility.

They will need to know which employer they believe they held a pension with along with employment dates.” The free Pension Tracing Service can be found at www.gov.uk/find-a-lost-pension

Nearly 1.4 million Londoners cutting back on winter essentials to pay their rent or mortgage The New Year may not be very happy for millions of Londoners, as research by Shelter reveals nearly a third of rent or mortgage payers in the capital are cutting back on winter heating and clothing to meet their housing payments.

This is the equivalent to almost 1.4 million people.

The study by housing and homelessness charity Shelter and YouGov shows the strain people in London face this January, with one in ten rent or mortgage payers fearing they will be unable to meet their housing costs this month.

This is despite the fact that many have already cut back on Christmas to help pay their rent or mortgage, including reducing their spending on presents and food.

With our shortage of affordable homes leaving many families struggling with sky high housing costs, over 100,000 people have sought advice on housing debt from Shelter’s helpline, online, or face-to-face services in the last year.

The charity is urging anyone starting to have difficulties paying their rent or mortgage to get help as early as possible to avoid losing their home.

Shelter’s helpline adviser Danielle Goodwin said: “It never gets easier to hear someone on the phone in tears, and at breaking point from the weight of their spiralling housing payments.

“Every day at Shelter we hear from families who face the bleak choice between missing their rent or cutting back on heating – even though their families have barely had a Christmas to celebrate.

“So many people are feeling the pinch and there’s no shame in asking for help, which is why Shelter is here 365 days a year. Getting advice early can make all the difference, and we’re only ever a click or a call away at shelter.org.uk/advice or on 0808 800 4444.”

 

Case study: Michelle and her family have had the threat of eviction hanging over them since husband Kevin became self-employed in his job as a builder.

“Even though my husband works as many hours as he can, it’s constantly hand to mouth. We cut back on everything to pay the rent – including food. When the children are at school the heating isn’t on at all, and over Christmas we had to cut back on presents and clothing.

“I try to hide it as much as I can from my youngest children but they know they can’t ask for treats, and not to let anyone they don’t know into the house in case the bailiffs come round.

I hate living like that. I recently went to the doctor because the stress of it all has made my asthma worse.

“When I rang Shelter my adviser was really supportive and I felt for the first time, there might be light at the end of the tunnel. I found out that there are things you can do to stay in your home.”

2. Focus on housing costs first: Make sure paying your mortgage or rent is the priority. The most important thing is to keep your home, even if you are getting demands from credit card and payday loan companies.

4. Get help with rent arrears: Miss two rent payments and you could be at risk of eviction. See if you can claim housing benefit to help pay the rent.

5. Respond to letters and phone calls. It’s natural to want to keep your head down and hope it’ll sort itself out but it’s important to read everything your mortgage lender, landlord or letting agent sends to you. Keep records of every letter and phone call.
