Gusto Italia Awards – A Taste of Italy in London London

London –  Friday 30th October 2015 – The Italian catering industry is gearing up to host two days of festivities in the heart of London’s Mayfair culminating in the ‘Gusto Italia’ award ceremony for the best Italian gourmet chefs and sommeliers in town.

Piccadilly’s Le Méridien will welcome more than 60 delegates from Italy’s Friuli, Abruzzo, Marche and Sicily regions to its Gusto Italia Showroom on Monday 16th November from 10am to 6pm.

And with them will come thousands of bottles of wine and the best of local authentic food products especially for the occasion -. The aim of the event is to build bridges between the UK and Italy and make sure the best Italian products are reaching the UK market. Guests will be able to enjoy six masterclasses on topics including Italian extra virgin olive oil and Sicilian wines from the slopes of Mount Etna.

The event organizer, Carmelo Carnevale, president of the professional Italian chef alliance in the UK APCI-UK says, ‘It’s vital to value locally sourced produce if the quality of Italian cuisine is to survive. That’s why an event such as the Gusto Italia awards is so important in London, the hub of international commerce and trade.’ Celebrity chefs and other experts will attend a Gala on Tuesday 17th November at 7pm to crown this year’s winners.

There are five Award Categories which include: Best Chef, best barman/sommelier, best Restaurateur, best promising young talent and a press award.

The guest of honour this year is Cosimo Rummo, the president and managing director of Rummo Pasta, and who recently received enormous support from the Italian community in London in the wake of a flood which damaged the factory that has produced the popular Rummo pasta for the past 160 years.

The event is organized by APCI-UK in collaboration with AIS Sicilia (Italian Association of Sommeliers, Sicily) with the support of the Italian Trade Agency, London.

The Brain a “Perfect machine”

London – Brain’s study has always fascinated millions of people, bringing several scientists to be interest in its many facets. How many people know, the “Perfect machine” is the pinnacle of nervous system of living beings.

But how do this “Perfect machine” works? And why had it always fascinated both scientific and not-scientific words? The brain is composed of about 100 billion nervous cells (neurons) that transmit some information through electrical impulses.

Neurons communicate with each other at special junctions where chemicals help to bridge the distance between one neuron and the next one. Thanks to these nervous cells, you can do many different things such as thinking, doing actions, reacting, etc.

The brain receives these impulses directly from your senses: feel, hear, taste, smell and sight. You are able to recognize the odour of something that it is familiar to you, because the smell fixes better than other senses in your “Perfect machine”.

So now you understand that when you do an action, for example to raise your arm, in your body are transmitted millions of impulses that bring the information to the brain. In the end we can say that nervous impulses are at the base of each single movement. All this occurs in normal condition of the brain; when drugs and alcohol affect it, they break neurons and slow down connections between them. This effect is commonly seen on people that use drugs. In some moments they have peaks of euphoria because drugs help to speed the connections; then when this effect ends, the speed of nervous impulses decreases, destroying connections between neurons. Thus it is important to take care of ourselves, to pay attention to our habits that could be dangerous for our fundamental organs’ functions.

God willing: a great surprise

The latest Edoardo Falcone’s film has been a revelation.

Located in the heart of East London there is a small and interesting cinema that differs from its competitors by being always current and innovative.

The staff of CinemaItaliaUK organise the screening of a selection of Italian films once per month, and in doing so, they almost carry one corner of Italy to the center of a huge metropolis like London.

The title of the last Italian film screened was “God Willing”, directed by Edoardo Falcone and interpreted by two great: actors Marco Giallini and Alessandro Gassman.

The story is focused on the daily life of a well-off family in Rome that over the course of the film will come across to some unexpected experiences. Each member of this family goes through their own identity crisis, but not everyone will be affected the way we might expect.

The story begins like a normal Italian comedy, which for me was not the beast start, as I have always enjoyed thrillers more. However, over the course of the screening I changed my opinion, because God Willing turn out to be much more than a simple comedy. I changed my opinion exactly like the protagonist changes his in the story – that curiously, his name was Tommaso, just like mine.

Tommaso (Marco Giallini) is an important and very professional surgeon who believes strongly in the power of the science and his expert hands. Not only did he not believe in God and Christianity, he was also a member of anti-religious movements, which he joined when he was at university.

When his son announces to the family that he wants to become a priest, Tommaso tries desperately to show him that Don Piero (Alessandro Gassman) was not a good person, with a turbolent past.

Don Piero notices Tommaso’s attempts to besmirch him, and gets him to help with the restoration of a ruined church. From this moment on, the lives of these two “enemies” will be linked, and while Tommaso begins a personal jorney towards the Church, the members of his family will remain at the start point.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS HERE (AND FEEDS ON OUR DATA)

                  Ai 3                            AI 1

Summary:  Artificial Intelligence evolved from its ambitious beginnings to the surprising latest twist: the creation of autonomous systems operating over the internet that improve with experience, performing tasks once reserved to humans, such as: translations, recommendations, filtering of mail. These developments however come to a cost: the secret ingredient that allows these systems to function is data – often our own personal data – and the business model of this new artificial intelligence is advertising.  We live in an age where we cannot opt out of a data infrastructure which monitors and analyses our behaviour as part of pursuing its goals.

Speaker biography:Cristianini holds a degree in Physics from the University of Trieste, a Master in Computational Intelligence from the University of London and a PhD from the University of Bristol. Previously he has been an Associate Professor at the University of California, Davis. Recent research has focused on the big-data analysis of newspapers content, the analysis of social media content, and the ethical implication of data-driven approaches to science and society. Cristianini is a recipient of the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award and a current holder of a European Research Council Advanced Grant. In June 2014 he was included in a list of the “most influential scientists of the decade” compiled by Thomson Reuters.

The price of the english college – Oxford or Cambridge?

London – In the country where the first system of welfare state it has been successfully introduced, the annual cost of the university can be very expensive, but when we think about the United Kingdom we should know that the career of studies on this country is not seen as an obligation, but a real opportunity for the future professional life.

Indeed, in 1942, while the government was adopting the “Beveridge Report”, the citizens began to be assisted, as the famous phrase says: “from the cradle to the grave”.

Beveridge, was an important British economist and with his innovative document literally changed the usual social reform normally adopted by the Anglo-Saxon world. However, the “Beveridge Report” didn’t change the oldest and most prestigious British university system. Accordingly, still today to win the selection to get in on one of the universities that belong to the Russel Group is very difficult and also the cost of a semester can be very high. Nevertheless, when they get into the world of work all these efforts reward the students that once graduated, as first salary they can get up to £18.000 per year.

Obviously, the graduates of the two most important universities of Great Britain, Oxford and Cambridge, can earn in their first year of work even £27.000, which on this case there is a wide variation, but it regards specially the first year of employee because over the years the difference decreases.

Oxford and Cambridge are two of the best universities of the world, and to access, it is a rare privilege, due to its annual cost that can reach high sums, and nonetheless it is a safe investment for a professional future.

The group Oxford-Cambridge is still called Oxbridge, aiming to remark the similarities that exist between these two historical universities.

A recent research launched by the daily “The Guardian” affirms that former students of Oxbridge can earn over all theirs working life up to £1’800.000 that amounts to almost € 2’500.000.

If we would like to compare this sum of money with the salary received by graduates in one of the universities that belong to the Russel Group in all their professional life, we will discover that the graduates of the Russel Group earn £200.000 less than those from the Oxbridge.

Even though the opportunities offered by the Russel Group are profitable, the Oxbridge group guarantees a direct and important connection to a world of work, for this reason to belong to at least one of these institutions means to become a successful person.

The competition to hold one of the limited places is, every year, very hard and those that are held are mostly won by the descendants of rich families. Despite, there are also scholarships that allow, to deserving students, to finally sit down in one of the famous classrooms of the Oxford and Cambridge.

The students of minor universities, at the end of their studies, may take a long and difficult way if they want to achieve a good salary as those of the graduates from the Oxbridge or Russel group, but these are the risks of a competitive society like the English one.

This research provides us an interesting time to reflect, because it shows how much the role of London is important to a whole country. Indeed, the majority of these prestigious universities are located in the center, in the hinterland and in different cities near the capital, doing of London the true cultural engine of a National community.

THE PRECOLUMBIAN CIVILIZATION : between Maya and Aztecs

In the British Museum you can visit the area of the Precolombian civilizations in particular of the Maya and Aztecs that settled in the centre and the south America before the New world was discovered by Cristoforo Colombo in 1492.

These popolations had some things in common:they were sedentery, they practised agriculture but they were warriors too infact they thought that war was a religious duty and they often fought each other.

And that’ s the reason why we haven’t a lot of reperts from these civilization. But what you can see in the museum are a lot of little things like handmade instruments and utensils that are inspired to the nature or to the animals.

So you can find out that these people were very close to the nature that was around them. The society was organised in a gerarchy and even if the Head Was the king they didn’t live in an empire but in city-states.

By the time they also developed a language made of symbols, with wich they could comunicate each other. They were interesting in studying astronomy and watching the astries so they realized a calendar with wich they predicted that the world would probably finish in 2012… But this didn’t happen!

So if you have the chance to go and visit the british museum don’t stop only to the greek zone or to the most famous reperts but vist also these very interesting civilization and learn more about them!

The Manhattan of London

If you want to see a little Manhattan in the city of London, you can find it in Canary Wharf, situated in Tower Hamlets, east London. It is one of the main financial centres in the UK where the highest buildings of Europe such as the One Canada Square can be found. Canary Wharf is also defined as ‘a city in the City’.

In Canary Wharf the office’s surface is around 14,000,000 square feet. The neighbourhood hosts the most known banks such as Barclays, J.P. Morgan and Citigroup. There is not just business in Canary, but also residents. The majority of the apartments are very small and comfortable.

In Canary Wharf people are always in a hurry; the main square is surrounded by clocks in order to remember that “time is money” so they cannot stop even just for a minute, because every day in Canary Wharf a money could be lost, or could be earned.

If you really want to feel the Manhattan atmosphere you have to see it in the night, when all the buildings are enlightened and one can have a magical feeling.

So do not miss the chance of visiting this amazing area of London!
